The main reference for the treatment of people with severe traumas, the Metropolitan Emergency and Urgency Hospital (HMUE), in Ananindeua, Metropolitan Region of Belém, operates in the care of people with medium and high complexity traumas. With a prepared structure, a specialized multidisciplinary team, and humanized care, in addition to the hyperbaric medicine service, unprecedented in the Unified Health System (SUS) of the North, the unit of the state public health network continues to be a protagonist in care.

The demand for emergency care grew by 12% in the first three months of 2025 (with 1,748 treatments for traffic accident victims) compared to the same period in 2024. Most of those treated are young men aged between 20 and 49 years.

Ygor Costa, 22, has been hospitalized for 11 days for treatment and emphasizes that prevention is still the best medicine. "The advice I give is for people to pay attention and to drive for themselves and for others. Many times, accidents happen due to lack of attention and prudence."

In the same profile, Lucas Leal, 25, a resident of the Outeiro District in Belém, is also receiving treatment at the unit. "Thank God, I was well treated at the Metropolitan. From the moment I arrived, the team acted to relieve my pain and quickly referred me for surgery," he recalls.

Attention to traffic rules can prevent accidents, doctor emphasizes

The medical director of the Hospital, Clóvis Guse, points out that the increase reflects a scenario that demands attention, especially because the injured are young people in the most productive phase of life, a factor that, among others, can affect the family budget.

"Many of these accidents could be avoided with simple measures, such as wearing seat belts, helmets, and respecting speed limits. The Metropolitan is prepared to meet the demands, but it is essential that the population adopts safer behaviors in traffic," instructs the director.

Collisions, followed by motorcycle accidents and run-overs, are the main causes of care. Regarding the length of hospitalization, the director points out that it varies from case to case.

"The time these patients will spend in the Hospital can vary more or less, depending on the clinical picture presented and the conduct indicated for the injury presented. Normally, the profile of patients hospitalized in this context is of people with complex traumas, and the average length of stay is seven days," he explains.

Tips for preventing traffic accidents:
– Under no circumstances drive after consuming alcoholic beverages;
– Always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, both as a passenger and as a rider;
– Respect the number of people in each type of vehicle. On a motorcycle, two. In private cars, five people in total (including the driver);
– Do not exceed the speed limits of the roads and respect the signage;
– Wear seat belts in the front seat and also in the back;

In case of an accident, call the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) at number 192.
