The Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio) and the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS) strengthened their strategic partnership for the protection of the Amazon rainforest this Friday (16) in Belém. The president of Ideflor-Bio, Nilson Pinto, received the Superintendent of Innovation and Institutional Development of FAS, Victor Salviati, to discuss the next steps of cooperation between the two institutions. Among the topics discussed was the prospecting of areas for the creation of new state Conservation Units (UCs).

The partnership between Ideflor-Bio and FAS has generated significant results. One of the main achievements is the creation of the State Park of Giant Trees, located in the municipality of Almeirim. The new UC protects an area of 560 thousand hectares of the former State Forest of Paru, which was reclassified from Sustainable Use to Full Protection. The region is home to the tallest tree in South America, a red angelim measuring 88.5 meters in height, as well as 35 other trees over 70 meters tall.

During the meeting, the president of Ideflor-Bio highlighted the relevance of the Foundation in consolidating the Park and reinforced the intention to expand institutional collaboration. “FAS has been a strategic partner of Ideflor-Bio. The excellence of the cooperation we have carried out has generated extremely important products for the protection of the Amazon rainforest,” said Nilson Pinto.

Technical cooperation – The partnership between Ideflor-Bio and FAS is formalized through a Technical Cooperation Agreement (ACT), signed in August 2023. The ACT establishes the Foundation's technical support for the creation, reclassification, and implementation of UCs in Pará, contributing technical knowledge and fundraising for projects conducted by the Institute. The leadership of the actions remains under the responsibility of Ideflor-Bio, with FAS acting as a strategic partner in execution.

During the meeting, Nilson Pinto informed that seven areas are in the prospecting phase to become new Conservation Units. Although there is still no definition on which will be prioritized, the president reinforced the commitment to continue cooperation. “We are still in the evaluation phase, but what is certain is that we will continue working together. The experience accumulated in the creation and implementation of UCs will be fundamental for us to advance responsibly and efficiently,” he added.

Victor Salviati also reaffirmed the Foundation's alignment with the environmental goals of the State and highlighted the Institute's leadership in the process. Both institutions remain united in the mission to expand the protection of strategic areas of the Amazon rainforest, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and addressing climate change on a regional and global scale.

“FAS has been a fundamental ally in our mission to protect the forest. The creation of the Giant Trees Park was a milestone, but it is just the beginning. We will continue together, with the technical leadership of Ideflor-Bio and the strategic cooperation of FAS, to ensure that more areas of high ecological value are conserved for future generations,” concluded Nilson Pinto.
