Seven works developed by professionals from the Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital (Hoiol) were presented during the XIX Brazilian Congress of Pediatric Oncology, held from May 14 to 17 in São Paulo (SP). The event brought together the leading names in the specialty in the country and reinforced the commitment of the Pará health unit to research, innovation, and comprehensive care for the users served.

The central theme of the 19th edition of the congress was: "Equity in Pediatric Oncology Treatment: Ensuring Universal Access to Technologies and Therapeutic Advances to Increase Cure Chances."

For pediatric oncologist and technical director of Hoiol, Alayde Wanderley, the event represented an important opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences among professionals from different regions of Brazil.

"We realized that we are on the right track. The participation of Hoiol professionals in the event was of great importance for the recognition of quality research focused on regionalization, helping in the expansion and benefits for applicability in the daily life of pediatric oncology in the state of Pará. During the event, the North region was able to showcase the good practices used, exchange experiences, and learn about new technologies focused on continuous updating," said the manager.

Notable Participation

During the congress, Alayde presented a paper on the review of rare tumors in pediatric oncology, acted as a moderator in two round tables, and lectured on four occasions.

"There were lectures on public policies that facilitate access to high-complexity hospitals and on understanding the healthcare network of each state. We showed the access protocol to Hoiol, which we built with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), and which facilitated the patient's journey," explained the specialist.

The doctor was also elected to join the board of the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Oncology (Sobope) for the 2025-2027 term.

Nursing and Regulations

The assistant director of Hoiol, Alnilan Urel, was also a speaker at the event at the invitation of oncology nurse Ana Lygia Melaragno, president of the Nursing Committee of Sobope and the Brazilian Nursing Society (ABEn-SP).

During the presentation of the work "Nursing Process in Pediatric Oncology: Challenges and Perspectives," Alnilan addressed resolutions from the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen), such as No. 736/2024, which deals with the implementation of the nursing process in all socio-environmental contexts of care.

The presentation was praised for its clarity and for including an experience report based on practices carried out at Hoiol.

"Our participation in the Congress was a unique experience, a privilege to be with a team representing the Octávio Lobo Children's Oncology Hospital, the largest public hospital in Brazil with exclusive beds for pediatric oncology. We gained visibility and demonstrated that the nursing process at Hoiol is well established. In addition, we strengthened ties and represented the nursing professionals working in pediatric oncology in the state of Pará," said Alnilan.

She also presented the study "Evaluation of Adherence to the Clinical Deterioration Protocol in the Inpatient Unit of a Pediatric Oncology Hospital."

"Pediatric oncology is still an area with scarce scientific content. However, the studies presented at the event brought updates in the field and incentives for research. The content presented provided us with reflections and learnings to pursue continuous improvement for safe assistance," concluded Alnilan.

Educational Initiatives

The following works were also presented:

- "The Use of Board Games About Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria: An Educational Action Aimed at Oncology Patients and Their Companions";

- "Golden Hour in Optimizing the Service Time for Febrile Oncology Patients: A Continuous Improvement Study";

- "Practical Educational Action to Encourage Hand Hygiene Aimed at Pediatric Oncology Patients."

All three were presented by Adrielle Monteiro, coordinator of the Hospital Infection Control Service (SCIH).

"Scientific congresses, in addition to promoting professional updating, are strategic spaces for discussing weaknesses and expanding collaboration networks. Events like this help us understand that some challenges are common in other regions of Brazil. It was very gratifying to realize that our work is on par with activities carried out in other states and to receive praise from renowned professionals, such as nurse Ana Lygia. Seeing our work recognized motivates us even more to continue and document what we do with such dedication," highlighted Adrielle.

Science Applied to Hospital Routine

Another point emphasized by Adrielle was the impact of scientific production on the consolidation of daily practices. "It is not a guess. What we do has scientific grounding. We have indicators that show what is working and what needs improvement. This translates into better care for the user," she stated.

Research and Nursing Leadership

The coordinator of Chemotherapy and the Immediate Care Unit (UAI) of Hoiol, Fábia Araújo, also participated in the congress. She advocated for the importance of exchange among specialists as a way to strengthen processes and enrich practice and presented her authored studies: "Nurse Leadership in the Improvements Implemented in the Chemotherapy Outpatient Clinic of a Pediatric Oncology Hospital" and "Development of Algorithms for the Selection of Venous Catheters in a Pediatric Oncology Hospital."

"We know that nursing plays a fundamental role in scientific production in pediatric oncology. After all, nursing professionals are directly involved in the daily care of patients, which places them in a strategic position to identify issues that can be transformed into research. This contribution is essential for developing new therapeutic approaches, improving the quality of care, and the experience of children and their families during treatment," she added.
