The Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio) is promoting urban reforestation and environmental education at the Usina da Paz (UsiPaz) in Benevides, in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. The environmental agency of the Government of Pará delivered various seedlings of forest and fruit species to the new nursery installed at the unit, reinforcing the commitment to biodiversity preservation and community engagement.

The initiative was coordinated by the Forest Chain Development Directorate (DDF) of Ideflor-Bio and involved the participation of technicians, civil servants, and representatives of the local community. In addition to the delivery of seedlings, the event included educational activities aimed at environmental awareness, with a special focus on the audience served by UsiPaz, one of the main social programs of the State Government.

According to the director of DDF, Vicente Neto, the action fulfills one of the central pillars of Ideflor-Bio's work: integrating urban reforestation with environmental education and community participation. "Activities like this aim to promote biodiversity preservation, environmental awareness, and the involvement of families participating in the actions of the Usina da Paz in Benevides," he stated.

The new nursery will house seedlings of native Amazon species, such as andiroba, açaí, cocoa, cupuaçu, and Brazil nuts. According to Vicente Neto, the space will be used for workshops, guided visits, and planting projects in schools in the region, always with specialized technical guidance. "We will transform the nursery into a learning tool for children, young people, and adults, encouraging direct contact with the forest and its riches," he added.

Involvement of the school community

The proposal from Ideflor-Bio also aims to mobilize schools around UsiPaz in sustainable practices. With the support of educational institutions in the area, guided plantings are being carried out in previously authorized locations, promoting the bond between students and the environment, as well as valuing knowledge about Amazonian species. The action seeks to strengthen ecological awareness among teachers, students, and managers.

The Usinas da Paz are public facilities that concentrate essential services and social policies in areas of greater social vulnerability, promoting citizenship and inclusion. Ideflor-Bio's work in these spaces reinforces the dialogue between the public authority and the community, offering sustainable alternatives for local development.

In addition to its work at UsiPaz, the Institute maintains a permanent calendar of environmental actions in different regions of the state. Activities include lectures, collective plantings with students from the state public network, and thematic workshops, to form a more conscious generation connected with the challenges and potential of the Amazon rainforest.
