On this Thursday (5), the date celebrated as World Environment Day, the Hospital da Mulher do Pará (HMPA) takes the moment to reflect and reaffirm its role in environmental preservation. Beyond caring for physical health, the institution understands that promoting sustainability is fundamental for life.

Environmental engineer Rayane Pereira highlights sustainable practices in the hospital environment

According to environmental engineer Rayane Pereira, the date is an opportunity to raise awareness among all audiences that circulate through the hospital - employees, patients, companions, and visitors. "Caring for health also involves caring for the environment. When everyone understands that they are part of nature, transformation begins," she emphasizes.

Among the main challenges faced by hospitals in the environmental area are the intensive consumption of energy and water, the disposal and management of hospital waste.

In this context, Environmental Engineering plays a fundamental role. "It acts in monitoring water quality, in the rational use of inputs, in the correct disposal of waste, and in analyzing the environmental impacts of various hospital activities," explains Rayane. For the specialist, the focus is to make the hospital increasingly safe and sustainable.

According to Allan Aquino, operational supervisor of HMPA, the hospital unit, which is a reference in women's care and was delivered in March of this year, is already promoting sustainable actions that benefit society. "We have paper recycling, and we also donate cardboard and plastics, provided in the surgical center, Central Sterilization Material to a cooperative and to a hospital cleaning service company," he emphasized.

Conscious consumption of food by the hospital's nutrition service

The hospital unit also has a project to create a sustainable garden for the hospital kitchen, using composting, in addition to landscaping communal areas, partnerships with other agencies and educational institutions to develop other projects, always focusing on sustainability and health, being some of the initiatives to promote well-being and reduce environmental impacts.

"Continuous environmental education is essential. Patients and employees who go through this learning can take this knowledge home, becoming multipliers of good practices," says the engineer. She emphasizes that, more than implementing sustainable structures, it is necessary to strengthen a culture of care for the planet within health institutions.

Reflecting on the importance of World Environment Day, the engineer extends an invitation to the public and users of the Hospital da Mulher. "It is a day to remember that the environment is also here in this hospital, where so many women pass through every day, and we know that caring requires time, attention, and presence, and actions, even small gestures, like separating waste or saving water, make a difference, because a healthy environment is essential for the health of all of us," concluded the environmental engineer.
