Galileu Hospital reinforces blood donation for patients with orthopedic trauma

The Hospital emphasizes that the gesture of solidarity is vital for patients with multiple fractures, polytrauma, and severe anemia in case of trauma

During the month of June, Brazil dresses in red to remind us of the importance of a simple gesture that saves lives: blood donation. The "Red June" campaign is a national mobilization aimed at raising awareness among the population about the importance of this continuous act of love. The red color, a symbol of life, stands out even more in a scenario where the need is urgent — such as in cases of severe orthopedic trauma.

To better understand this reality, the coordinator of the Orthopedics service at the Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG), in Greater Belém, Marcos Preti, highlights the urgency and attention that society needs to have on the subject. The institution is a reference for the State Government in medium and high complexity orthopedic surgeries in Pará.

Vital donation

"Blood donation saves lives every day, and for traumatic orthopedics, it is literally a vital input," explains the coordinator. In patients with multiple fractures, polytrauma, or severe anemia, donated blood is essential for clinical stabilization and the safe performance of surgical procedures.

According to the doctor, the number of blood bags used varies according to the procedure and the clinical state of the patient. "In more complex surgeries or in patients with pre-existing anemia, we use hemoconcentrates. Each case requires a careful evaluation," he reinforces.

If there is a shortage of blood in the stocks, the consequences can be serious. "The absence of adequate reserves can suspend orthopedic surgeries and put lives at risk," he warns. The urgency and unpredictability of care require that blood banks are always stocked.

In particular, HPEG, as a backup hospital for polytrauma patients, relies on an active network of donors to maintain care. "We cannot predict when an accident will happen. But we can prepare, and that starts with regular donations," explains the doctor.

Red June

Created to raise awareness about donation, 'Red June' aims to increase the number of regular donors, especially during critical periods such as winter and long holidays, when stocks naturally decline. The campaign gains strength with the support of institutions and actions in blood centers, which honor and welcome donors.

"Campaigns like this have a direct impact on orthopedics and other urgent specialties. Patients with severe trauma, bone cancers, or in chronic treatment benefit directly from this collective effort," highlights the orthopedist.

Although the challenges are great — such as stock fluctuations and the population's fear of donating — Galileu Hospital seeks continuous strategies to engage the community. The hospital's coordination informs that the board evaluates local campaigns to encourage donations in partnership with blood centers and community leaders.

Appeal

The coordinator makes an emotional appeal to the population: "Every day, we receive patients who are victims of accidents, with complex fractures, needing urgent surgeries. Many of them only have a chance thanks to a simple and generous gesture: blood donation," he noted.

The doctor emphasizes that blood cannot be manufactured. "It only reaches our patients because someone, like you, decided to lend a hand. In cases of orthopedic trauma, transfusion is essential to stabilize the patient and ensure recovery," the orthopedist stressed.

Marcus Preti also invites the population to become regular donors. "Your attitude can be the difference between life and death for those waiting for a second chance — to live, to walk again, to hug their family once more. Donate blood. A simple gesture that saves lives — including that of those who need to walk again," Preti invited.

How to donate:

Look for Hemopa or mobile collection units. To donate, you must be healthy, weigh more than 50 kg, be between 16 and 69 years old (minors with consent), and carry an official photo ID.
