The State Secretariat for Environment, Climate and Sustainability of Pará (Semas) was present at the event "COP30: Challenges and Proposals Towards Global Sustainability," promoted by the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo (IEA-USP), last Thursday (12). The aim was to address ways to mitigate the effects caused by climate change and present Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria as available metrics in overcoming the challenges of the Amazon for the world.

During the meeting, the State highlighted the advances and strategies implemented to consolidate a new development model based on bioeconomy and the transition to a green economy, as well as the main aspects of the State Bioeconomy Plan (PlanBio), which integrates the State Plan for Amazon Now (PEAA) and is configured as one of the strategies for Pará's transition towards carbon neutrality.

The Deputy Secretary of Bioeconomy, Camille Bemerguy, represented Semas and highlighted the pioneering nature of PlanBio. "The State of Pará was a pioneer in building a state bioeconomy plan, launched back in October 2022, at a time when little was said about bioeconomy in the Amazon," she stated.

"This initiative was the result of the understanding that the State was bringing the climate agenda to the center of public policies and that, from this, it would be necessary to build a series of strategies to change Pará's economic paradigm towards a carbon-neutral State," she affirmed.

One of the points of the debate was the challenge of creating more green areas, especially in Belém, the host city of COP30 (30th World Climate Change Conference). In response, Camille mentioned the development of an urban greening plan for the city, with support from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The plan foresees the planting of 200,000 native trees in the capital of Pará, aiming to reverse the low vegetation cover and reduce climate impacts.

"This greening plan is being developed with resources from BNDES, with the goal of promoting urban greening in the city. But I believe that all elements of research and innovation that can bring new contributions to the theme of green areas and areas with potential are very welcome," added the deputy secretary.

The USP event brought together researchers, public managers, journalists, and representatives of civil society to discuss possible paths for global sustainability, marking the realization of COP30 in Belém in 2025.
