As a reference in public health in western Pará, the Regional Hospital of Tapajós (HRT) celebrates four years since the start of the hemodialysis service at the unit. Since 2021, a total of 30,347 procedures have been performed, benefiting patients from various municipalities in the Tapajós region, with humanized care and a dedicated multiprofessional team.

The service offered, through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), has significantly increased access to treatment for people with chronic kidney failure, who previously had to travel long distances to larger centers like Santarém and Altamira.

Currently, the hemodialysis sector of the Regional Hospital of Tapajós serves 80 patients, distributed across three daily shifts. The hospital's care manager, Carlos Henrique, highlights the importance of the established structure.

“It is an achievement for the entire region. We have a great modern structure, ensuring safety and comfort during the procedure,” he states.

For patient Jorge Pereira de Lemos, who has been receiving treatment since the service was implemented, the change has been significant.

“Today I have quality of life, my health has improved, and life has become lighter. Here we have a family, we have the best team in the unit and excellent professionals who care for us with great attention, respect, and affection,” he emphasizes.

According to the hospital's general director, Salomão Favacho, the hemodialysis service is one of the pillars of specialized care offered at the unit.

“Our goal is to provide safe and comprehensive care, which includes not only the procedure itself but also multiprofessional follow-up with psychologists, nutritionists, social workers, the emergency and urgent care support of the hospital, and all the structure of the Regional that is available to our nephrology patients,” he reinforces.

In addition to conventional hemodialysis, the hospital also offers support in clinical nephrology and specific laboratory tests.

Data from the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN) indicate that Brazil has over 145,000 people on dialysis, and Pará has been standing out among the states that have invested the most in decentralizing access to treatment, thanks to the actions of the State Government.

Regional Integration

The Regional Hospital of Tapajós serves patients from the municipalities of Itaituba, Trairão, Jacareacanga, Aveiro, Rurópolis, and Novo Progresso. The local implementation of the hemodialysis service has contributed to the decentralization of the service in Santarém and Belém.

The head of the State Department of Public Health, Ivete Gadelha Vaz, highlights the impact of the decentralization of services. “Bringing specialized assistance to the interior is a guideline of the State Government. With hemodialysis at the Regional Hospital of Tapajós, we ensure dignity and better quality of life for the population of the Tapajós region,” she states.

Access to the service is 100% free, through the Unified Health System (SUS), with referrals from Basic Health Units (UBS) and state regulation.

The Regional Hospital of Tapajós, managed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde, in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), is a unit belonging to the Government of Pará. With 153 beds, including Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal ICUs, the Hospital reinforces its commitment to public health, providing high-quality services to meet the needs of the regional population.
