Government of Pará opens the City Park to the public, a reference for leisure, sports, and sustainability
The largest urban intervention carried out in recent decades in Belém, the City Park received 16,704 people until the gates closed at 10 PM.

The Government of Pará delivered this Friday (27), in Belém, the leisure area of the City Park, in the Sacramenta neighborhood, consolidating the largest investment in urban equipment in the capital in several decades. For Governor Helder Barbalho, the space is a source of pride for the population of the Metropolitan Region of Belém and the entire State, in addition to being one of the legacies that the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations (COP 30) leaves to the people of Pará. At the opening of the space, until 10 PM, when the gates were closed, the public reached 16,704 people.
“I am sure that this equipment comes to enhance Belém, enhance the State of Pará, within the concept of opportunity that COP brings, to leave a legacy for our capital and for the Pará society. For those who imagined, who preached in disbelief, that COP would not bring benefits to our city, come and get to know the City Park, the largest urban park in all of Brazil. We must be proud of what we are building together,” emphasized the governor.

Commitment - According to Helder Barbalho, the project was only made possible thanks to the support of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who fulfilled the commitment made with the State for the acquisition of the area that housed a small airport.
“The partnership of the federal government was very relevant for this to happen. This work is 100% funded by the State. But this space was a small airport of Infraero (Airport Infrastructure Company). From the government of President Lula, this area was made available, and the agreement in which the State paid was honored. It is important that we can, here, register this,” reiterated the head of the Executive, accompanied by Vice Governor Hana Ghassan and Mayor of Belém, Igor Normando.

Structure - The City Park brings together 14 environments aimed at sports and recreation, such as sports courts, outdoor gym, playground, running track, Olympic-sized skatepark, and the second largest in the country, and bike paths, built with low environmental impact solutions.
The space is aligned with the principles of sustainability, environmental protection, central themes of the climate conference, which will be held in November. With more than 2,500 trees planted, 190,000 ornamental species, and lawns covering 83,000 square meters, the complex contributes to thermal comfort, biodiversity, and air quality improvement. There are also technologies aimed at climate mitigation, such as two wetlands that naturally treat the water used in the restrooms and changing rooms, sufficient for up to 2,800 people per day, while solar panels and a rainwater recovery system contribute to carbon reduction in the complex.

Safety - Those who are already enjoying all this potential of the City Park are the population. Maria Dairza de Souza, 73 years old, has lived in the Pedreira neighborhood for 70 years and said she could never imagine one day enjoying a spacious, comfortable, and safe space.
“I came with the intention of looking at where I will walk. It is a safe place. I never thought in 73 years that we would have a park like this for all residents. I found this attitude of the governor and the team very commendable. I was very well received,” added Maria.
Paulo Adão, 20 years old, stated that the sports complex is his favorite area. “We never imagined having a park this size in Belém. It is an opportunity for people from all over the city. And since I live nearby, I come here with my friends to play volleyball and soccer,” he said.
The City Park will operate from 8 AM to 10 PM until July 31, except on Mondays, when in the morning the complex will be under maintenance, opening only at 4 PM. On August 1, the area will be handed over to the UN for the setup of the Blue and Green Zones pavilions of COP 30.

Leisure for all ages - The summer camp at the Park received more than 8,400 online registrations. Starting this Saturday (28), new registrations can be made in person at the sports areas of the City Park. On weekends, entry will be free for the entire population.
The program is aimed at children and teenagers aged 4 to 16 years, and adults aged 60 and over. During the month of July (except on Mondays, due to maintenance), monitors will coordinate ten sports modalities, art workshops, storytelling, and specific activities for the 60+ audience.
