The definition of the next steps in the creation of three new Conservation Units (UCs) was the subject of the meeting between the president of the Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio), Nilson Pinto, and the Secretary of the Environment of Portel, Igor Diniz, this Tuesday (1st). The proposal is part of a strategy articulated between Ideflor-Bio, the Municipal City Hall, and the Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity (Funbio), aimed at environmental protection and sustainable development of the region.

During the meeting, held at the Institute's headquarters in Belém, it was determined that the Public Consultation with the population of Portel will take place in August this year. This stage is essential to listen to local communities, clarify doubts, and ensure social participation in the process of creating protected areas. The following categories of UCs will be proposed: an Area of Relevant Ecological Interest (Arie), a Wildlife Refuge (Revis), and a Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS).

Managers advance in dialogue to expand the State System of Conservation Units

The new units will expand the legal coverage of protection over strategic ecosystems in the Marajó region, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of natural resources, and the appreciation of traditional populations. The initiative also meets commitments made by the Government of Pará regarding the fight against climate change and the expansion of the State System of Conservation Units (Seuc).

Protagonism - "The municipality of Portel has a decisive role in the conservation of the Amazon, and it is through dialogue, science, and popular participation that we will build UCs that truly represent the interests of communities and the environment. Ideflor-Bio is committed to ensuring a transparent and technical process," said the president of the Institute.

In addition to Nilson Pinto and Igor Diniz, the meeting was attended by the Director of Biodiversity Management, Crisomar Lobato, and the Biodiversity Manager, Mônica Furtado, who presented the technical and environmental criteria used in the preliminary definition of the areas indicated for protection. The three identified regions were mapped based on their ecological and sociocultural characteristics.

Legacy - For Crisomar Lobato, the collective construction of UCs is essential for long-term success. "The support of the Portel City Hall and the direct involvement of the communities are pillars for these Conservation Units to fulfill their role. We are working responsibly, so that each stage of the process reflects the desires of the local population and the technical criteria required by environmental legislation," he emphasized.

The expectation is that, after the Public Consultation and the necessary technical adjustments, the decrees for the creation of the UCs will be published by September this year, consolidating another advance for Pará in the agenda of environmental conservation integrated with social justice.
