The Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará – Dr. Geraldo Veloso (HRSP), in Marabá, offers MRI exams with sedation for children suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The procedure provides comfort and safety for young patients, and more accurate results with humanized care. Children with ASD often have difficulty staying still during the exam.

Magnetic resonance imaging is an important tool in the neurological investigation of the autism spectrum. The exam contributes to more accurate diagnoses and the definition of personalized therapeutic approaches. Anesthetic sedation allows the procedure to occur smoothly, avoiding stress and discomfort for the child.

Eduarda Reis, mother of little Santiago, 3 years old, a resident of Tucuruí, shared her experience with the service. "This exam brought great relief to me and many mothers. My son couldn't stay still during the exams, which made us very anxious. With sedation, everything was calmer, and we were able to carry out the procedure without suffering and successfully," she reported.

According to the radiology supervisor of the unit, Glícia Kallena, the hospital is the only one in the region to offer the exam with sedation, a safe practice adopted by reference hospitals across the country. "Children often get scared of the hospital environment and the noise of the equipment. When they cannot stay still, the quality of the images is compromised," she explains.

Before the procedure, each child undergoes a thorough medical evaluation, and the sedation is carefully adjusted according to the age, weight, and health status of the patient, ensuring safety at all stages.

Glícia also emphasizes that the use of sedation contributes to diagnostic accuracy and avoids the need to repeat the exam. "The entire process is carried out with continuous monitoring of vital signs, ensuring safety and comfort for the patient," she emphasizes.

The unit's support manager, Paula Rafaela, reinforces that MRI with sedation is not limited to cases investigating ASD. "The exam is available for all children who have difficulty remaining still during the procedure, regardless of the diagnosis. Our goal is to ensure that all pediatric patients receive safe, welcoming, and quality care," she points out.

She also highlights the importance of MRI in the diagnostic process of autism. "The exam allows for the analysis of brain volume, neural connectivity, and possible structural changes associated with the disorder, contributing to a more comprehensive investigation," she states.

Quality Diagnosis

Managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), the Regional Hospital in Marabá is a reference in imaging diagnosis with MRI, tomography, X-ray, ultrasound, echocardiogram, endoscopy, and colonoscopy.

Flávio Marconsini, executive director of the unit, reinforces that these services are essential to ensure accurate diagnoses and effective treatments for users of the Unified Health System (SUS). "We continuously invest in technology and team training to ensure humanized and resolutive care, contributing to the recovery and well-being of our patients," says the manager.

How to access the service?

The exams performed at the Regional Hospital of Marabá are regulated by the State Regulation Center, coordinated by Sespa. To gain access, the citizen must seek medical care at a public health unit in their city. The professional will provide the necessary referral, which must be submitted, along with personal documents, to the Municipal Health Department, which will register and schedule in the State Regulation System.
