The strategy of installing public safety totems in Pará demonstrates its effectiveness by providing citizens with a direct and immediate line to the authorities in critical moments. This occurred in the early hours of this Thursday (03), when a robbery victim activated the police in the region through the equipment, and the quick action resulted in the seizure of a stolen motorcycle and the identification of suspects. The incident took place in Castanhal, northeastern Pará.

The victim, who had their cell phone stolen under the threat of a firearm, used the totem to alert the Military Police through the Integrated Operations Center (NIOp). The information was that two individuals, on a red motorcycle, stole the device and fled towards Tiradentes Street.

A police unit was dispatched, and the officers spotted the suspects on Vitória Régia Street, São José neighborhood. With the support of another unit, they surrounded the area, and upon seeing the police vehicles, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and fled through backyards. When the motorcycle was checked in police systems, it was found to be reported as stolen. Consequently, the motorcycle was presented for the necessary procedures.

The Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), Ualame Machado, details how the totems have contributed to the state's security system strategy.

“When someone needs police action or witnesses an accident, instead of looking for a phone or waiting for a patrol car, the person can simply press a button on the totem and speak directly to the police central. This saves precious time, which can be crucial in emergency situations. Additionally, the visible presence of the totems in strategic areas serves as a strong deterrent against crime, increasing the sense of security in the community,” he stated.

Security Equipment

In Castanhal, public safety totems have been installed in strategic locations such as the Apeú district, Estrela Square, and the intersection of Avenida dos Universitários with Avenida Brasil. The totems are part of the "Smart Cities" project and aim to reinforce public safety through the use of technology, including video monitoring and artificial intelligence.

The totems are equipped with high-resolution cameras that allow 360° viewing, as well as a front camera connected to an emergency button. When the button is pressed, the user can communicate directly with the Integrated Operations Center (Ciop) of the police, which will send teams to the location.

Furthermore, the totems have features such as facial recognition, vehicle license plate identification, sound alarms, and speakers for communication with the community. The goal is to provide a more efficient and integrated security system for the population.

The public safety totems are an initiative of the Government of Pará and seek to enhance security and emergency response, as well as assist in police investigations.
