Regional Hospital of Marajó strengthens environmental commitment with actions for the community
Reduction of energy consumption, replacement of disposable cups, and maintenance of the garden are among the examples of care for the environment reinforced by the unit of the state public health network
The Public Regional Hospital of Marajó (HRPM), in Breves, in the southwest of the Marajó Archipelago, a reference in providing medium and high complexity health services in the interior of Pará, maintains its commitment to sustainable development by promoting actions and projects aimed at environmental preservation and proper waste management.
The Hospital participates in the "Blue Guardian" Project, a national campaign by the National Institute for Social and Human Development (INDSH) that encourages sustainability practices in the health sector. As a result of this commitment, HRPM has already implemented several measures, such as reducing energy consumption, replacing disposable cups, and installing collection points for batteries, expired medications, and promoting guided visits to the garden for the community and hospitalized children. The unit also takes the experience of the hospital garden to schools, expanding the reach of environmental awareness.
With these actions, HRPM scored 68 points and secured 4th place in the first phase of the environmental race of the "Blue Guardian" Project. The Hospital also joined this month the "Little Guardians" Project, developed by SIA Ambiental, the company responsible for consulting INDSH in this area.

Encouragement - The "Little Guardians" Project promotes interaction between the Hospital, the community, and schools, providing guidance on environmental preservation, social responsibility, and health. In addition to raising awareness among children, the initiative also encourages the collection of recyclable materials, contributing to the formation of more conscious citizens committed to the future of the planet.
This week, HRPM conducted an educational and sustainable action aimed at children. The initiative was led by the Sustainability Commission (CS) of the unit and addressed, in a playful way, the importance of environmental preservation with elementary school students from the Municipal School Maria Rafos, located in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Breves.
"The partnership with the schools in the municipality is very important, especially regarding the development of environmental education. This action brought new perspectives for engaging in other actions related to sustainability. The dynamics were well presented by the Sustainability Commission to children and teachers, which generated a very positive impact," highlighted Renata Feio, a member of the CS of the Regional Hospital of Marajó.
Still this month, the Sustainability Commission of HRPM will promote other similar actions.

Approval - For Daniele Gonçalves Pinto, 36 years old, "the action brings information about care for the environment and develops environmental awareness. It is essential for life. We need to take care of nature to breathe better air, for better coexistence. Caring for the environment is fundamental. This action should be valued. It is great to know that HRPM works on these actions in the community," said the pedagogical coordinator.
HRPM has the largest pesticide-free garden in the public hospital network of the State, with an area of 180 square meters (m²), which includes hydroponic cultivation – a technique that does not use soil, based on a nutrient solution. The project has an organic waste composting system and promotes workshops for employees, patients, and companions, encouraging home cultivation of vegetables as a sustainable and income-generating alternative. The unit's commitment to producing healthy food and environmental preservation has already generated positive impacts, encouraging the creation of home, community, and school gardens.
The "Hospital Garden Project" has gained national recognition by receiving the "Friend of the Environment Award," granted by the Health Department of the State of São Paulo, which values socio-environmental initiatives in SUS (Unified Health System) units.

Certifications - In addition to this award, HRPM renewed the national "Green Kitchen" certification for the seventh consecutive year. Granted by the Foundation for Research in Architecture and Environment (Fupam), the certification recognizes institutions that adopt sustainable practices in the production of nutritious meals, without chemical additives and with respect for the environment.
The multidisciplinary team of HRPM has maintained the achievement of the Gold Seal, granted by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, developed by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV)/SP, since 2012. The seal is the highest level of recognition of the Program, awarded to organizations that present, in a complete and audited manner, the balance of their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
HRPM has also adopted new energy sources, receiving the international Renewable Energy Certificate I-REC (for renewable energy), which certifies the origin of clean energy, also known as green energy. The technological and sustainable innovation has already ensured a reduction in energy costs of over 30%.
