The Government of Pará will deliver, on the afternoon of this Wednesday (16), the works of the Vileta and Leal Martins channels in the Marco neighborhood, consolidating another advance in the largest macro-drainage program in the history of Belém. The interventions, which benefit more than 300,000 people living in the Tucunduba Basin area, are part of the legacies of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30), which will take place in the state capital in November 2025.

Rectified channels urbanize the city and benefit the population

“The works of the Vileta and Leal Martins channels represent another important moment for the people of Belém. It is a job that addresses the issue of flooding and improves the quality of life, ensuring more dignity for people, with the arrival of asphalt, which brings mobility and facilitates access to public services for residents,” highlights the Secretary of State for Public Works, Ruy Cabral.

In Travessa da Vileta, the interventions included the rectification of more than 400 meters of the channel, the implementation of new water supply networks, sewage systems, and storm drainage. A bridge and four walkways were also built, in addition to the paving of roads and filling in backyards.

Walkway built in the areas of the channels

Expectation - A resident of the area benefited, the self-employed Ana Maria Silva recalls the difficulties faced by the population before the works and looks forward to the growth of her commercial establishment with the urbanization. “Here, the edge of the channel was all broken and the street was very ugly. No cars, ambulances, police vehicles, nothing could pass. Now, they are already passing. In my sales, there will be barbecue, açaí, roasted chicken, everything I want to offer. Now, things will improve,” says Ana Maria.

In the Leal Martins Channel, 143 meters of the bed were reconstructed, with the paving of adjacent streets, the implementation of water supply networks, sewage systems, and storm drainage, all extended to the surrounding roads, in addition to road urbanization and filling in backyards. A bridge and a walkway were also built.

The works on the Vileta and Leal Martins channels are part of a set of interventions in the Marco neighborhood, which also includes the União channels, with ongoing works, and Timbó, delivered by the state in January of this year. The investments are from the Government of Pará, in partnership with the Federal Government, through the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

Historic work - Since 2019, the Government of Pará has already invested in the requalification of 17 channels in the capital, of which 13 are considered legacies of COP 30. Among the works already delivered are the channels of Igarapé Tucunduba, Rua dos Mundurucus, Travessa Timbó, Avenida Cipriano Santos, and the first stage of the Canal da Avenida Gentil Bittencourt.

The actions are part of the largest macro-drainage program in the history of Belém, with interventions also in the basins of Murutucu, Tamandaré, and Una, benefiting more than 500,000 people with urban infrastructure and flood prevention, essential for the quality of life of the population.
