With the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM), the government of Pará expanded access to intensive care, ensuring agility and efficiency in the treatment of critically ill patients. The modern infrastructure and qualified team of the state ICU has established itself as an essential service, strengthening the public health network and providing more safety to the population in need of intensive treatments.

This Tuesday (15), the adult ICU of the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM) reached its first year of operation, with significant advances for high-complexity care in Belém and the metropolitan region. In its first year of operation, approximately 450 patients were assisted in the sector, which consists of 10 beds for medium and high complexity care.

In the sector, the most treated cases are among the main high-complexity emergencies that require intensive support. Among them, emergency surgical cases stand out, such as post-operative care from immediate surgeries and critical invasive procedures, as well as severe infections, such as sepsis and pneumonia, which require advanced care. In addition to these cases, there is a high frequency of patients treated for renal complications, especially acute renal failure, who require intensive therapy, such as hemodialysis.

Modern structure and specialized team

“The combination of modern structure and specialized team allows our patients to receive the necessary care for stabilization and recovery in our Adult ICU. Along with this, I highlight our multiprofessional team as the foundation to ensure quality assistance and safety for patients,” emphasizes intensivist physician, Elder Nylander.

Composed of intensivist doctors, specialized nurses, physiotherapists, nutritionists, pharmacists, and social workers, all highly qualified, the team works in an integrated manner focused on patient-centered care. “This collaborative approach allows for accurate diagnoses, agile interventions, and humanization in care, which are fundamental for treating high-complexity cases,” adds the intensivist.

Patient Renata in the Adult ICU, in the final stage of recovery

Renata Monteiro Lopes, 50 years old, a resident of the Marco neighborhood, was the first patient admitted to the intensive treatment unit for adults at the Pronto-Socorro hospital, coming from an Urgent Care Unit, intubated due to a severe asthma condition. During this period, due to anuria (absence of urine production), the patient underwent hemodialysis, also requiring broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. With the specialized assistance provided by the multiprofessional team, combined with the physical structure and state-of-the-art equipment, the patient was able to overcome the critical phase and was discharged in just over 20 days of hospitalization.

“My experience in the ICU of the Roberto Macedo hospital was very positive. I found human beings with a professionalism I had never seen before, my family and friends in another hospital. I had the best doctors, the best nurses, the best physiotherapists, the best speech therapist, the best dentist, the best psychologists, the best cleaning and maintenance team, and the best management. Gratitude is my feeling for the ICU team of the Pronto-Socorro Roberto Macedo,” acknowledges Renata Lopes.

“We celebrate a very special milestone: the first year of operation of the Adult ICU of the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room. A unit that was born out of the need to provide immediate intensive care and that, over the course of this year, has established itself as a reference in humanized, safe, and excellent assistance. As the nursing coordinator, I am immensely proud to be part of this journey. It has been 365 days of challenges, achievements, and, above all, dedication. Each life cared for here represents the true purpose of our profession: to welcome, treat, and fight until the last resource for each patient,” emphasizes nurse Bianca Souza.

Qualified team

Continuous training of the Adult ICU professionals, associated with protocols based on the best scientific evidence, ensures the safety of the services provided and the reduction of risks, such as hospital infections and adverse events.

Coordinating the team of the ICU at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room is a great satisfaction, as the work combines high technical capacity, humanization, and direct impact on patient recovery. Seeing the commitment of the multiprofessional team, which works with dedication to save lives and provide safety, is inspiring. This ICU has become a reference in critical care, strengthening the health of the region and reaffirming our commitment to excellence and welcoming in intensive assistance,” adds Elder Nylander.

Certified quality of care

To offer the population using the services, an increasingly qualified care, investments are made in improving the care processes of the intensive unit.

Recently, the Adult ICU received the certification "Quality and Performance Indicators Management Seal," granted by the Brazilian Intensive Medicine Association (AMIB), ensuring that at the State Emergency Room, the ICU operates according to criteria established in accordance with the resolution of the Collegiate Board No. 7 of Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency), dated February 24, 2010, which provides for quality requirements for the operation of Intensive Care Units.

The seal is awarded to ICUs that manage their quality indicators, contributing to the improvement of the quality of intensive medicine and patient safety in Brazil. Through a computerized system, real-time analysis, benchmarking, and predictive analyses are allowed. The data feeding is done in a timely manner within the system, with the engagement of the entire multiprofessional team in complying with the flows and processes, always aiming for improvement plans for the processes involving intensive care.

Executive Director, Carlos Vinicius Ribeiro Quadro, points out that the recognition achieved demonstrates the commitment to good management and assistance practices, and this recognition places the Adult ICU in the race for another very important certification, the Efficient ICU seal, which is a certification granted to intensive care units (ICUs) that demonstrate high efficiency in resource management and quality in the care of critically ill patients.

“This first year of operation of our Adult ICU demonstrates that the sector is already consolidated by quality, safety, effectiveness, and assertiveness. We continue to prioritize the quality of intensive care treatment, always paying attention to our quality indicators, seeking to further qualify the services. This first year crowns the work of a very committed team that makes a difference every day. We will continue like this, always focused on the quality of care that our population needs and deserves, which has been directly reflected in the recovery of patients and in strengthening the population's trust in the health service offered in our Adult ICU,” assures the manager.
