Government of Pará delivers channels of Vileta and Leal Martins and benefits 300 thousand people in Belém
Interventions are part of the macrodrenage project of the Tucunduba Basin, which benefits 5 neighborhoods, including Marco

The Government of Pará delivered, this Wednesday (16), the channels of Travessa Vileta and Passagem José Leal Martins, in the Marco neighborhood, in Belém. The works are part of the macrodrenage project of the Tucunduba Basin, which reaches approximately 300 thousand residents of the capital, as part of the legacy of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém in November this year.
“These two works expand the delivery of the macrodrenage plan of our capital linked to the Tucunduba sector. It is a project that interacts with five neighborhoods in the city. A total of 543 meters of macrodrenage with sewage, water supply, and correction of water drainage with a new channel were delivered, preventing flooding. We corrected a historical problem and ensured a more dignified environment, with paved roads and better urban mobility,” highlighted Helder Barbalho.

The governor reinforced that the initiative demonstrates the positive impact of preparatory works for COP30 in various areas of the city. “It is a clear demonstration that this work transforms, fulfills dreams, and solves a chronic problem in one of the most populous neighborhoods of our capital,” he added.
Completed works and structural improvements
In Passagem José Leal Martins and Travessa Vileta, several interventions were made that directly benefit the local community. The channel was rectified along its entire length, and the surrounding streets received asphalt paving. The State Government installed new water supply, sewage, and storm drainage networks. Bridges and walkways were also built, in addition to the installation of sidewalks and filling of backyards.

The Vice Governor of Pará, Hana Ghassan, emphasized that the deliveries occurred within the planned schedule.
“It is another completed work. An initiative that will bring dignity to those who live in the Marco neighborhood. This work enhances properties and removes families from a problem that existed here, which was flooding,” she stressed.

A resident of Travessa Vileta for 35 years, housewife Lindalva Gonçalves, 63, reported that she had to make several renovations in her home due to flooding. “I redid the floor and raised it three times. Now it won’t be necessary anymore,” she celebrated. “Even the sewage has been done, and the drainage is being done properly,” she added.

Sandra Souza, 56, who has lived since her teenage years on Travessa Vileta, near Passagem José Leal Martins, celebrated the completion of the works alongside her aunt, Célia Virgínia, 83.
“The work solved a problem we faced here, which was water supply and sewage. We look out the window and see the paved street and a clean channel. How good it is to see that my aunt, at her age, can walk on a paved street,” she stated.

Partnerships and investments
The mayor of Belém, Igor Normando, recalled that he walked through the streets of the Marco neighborhood several times and knows the importance of macrodrenage for this area of the city. “It is a joy to see the work completed and delivered to the population. This is the result of serious, dedicated work,” he pointed out.

The works on the channels of Vileta and Leal Martins are part of a set of actions that also includes the macrodrenage of two other channels in the Marco neighborhood: União, currently underway, and Timbó, delivered by the State in January of this year. The investments are from the Government of Pará, in partnership with the Federal Government, through the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
“The importance of these projects is that they are made for those who live in Belém, to benefit the population of Belém. We are happy to be able to contribute to a better city that will host COP30,” said José Carlos Lima, advisor to the presidency of BNDES.

Other deliveries in 2025
In addition to the channels of Vileta and Leal Martins, delivered this Wednesday (16), the Government of Pará delivered, in May, the channel of Cipriano Santos, benefiting residents of the neighborhoods of Canudos and Terra Firme.
In January of this year, the State delivered the channel of Timbó, in the Marco neighborhood. With over a thousand meters in length, the channel underwent reconstruction, including the asphalt paving of the streets along its banks, installation of water supply, sewage, and storm drainage networks. Walkways, a bridge, a bike lane, filling of backyards, and road urbanization were also constructed.
Also in January, the channel of Gentil was delivered, in the stretch between Rua da Olaria and Travessa Teófilo Conduru, in the Canudos neighborhood, as part of the legacy of COP30. The works, carried out by the State Department of Public Works (Seop), included the recovery of the channel walls, new water supply and sewage networks, asphalt paving of the side roads, a bridge, two walkways, and road urbanization.
