Pará and Avianca commit to new international route Belém-Bogotá

New connection expands the legacy of COP 30 and the opportunities for tourism and integration between Pará, Brazil, and Latin America

In a strategic step to consolidate Belém International Airport as an air hub for the Amazon, the Government of Pará and the Colombian airline Avianca announced last Wednesday (16) the creation of a new international route connecting Belém to Bogotá (Colombia). The commitment was made by the State Governor, Helder Barbalho, along with the company's CEO, Frederico Pedreira, and the chief revenue officer, Claudio Vélez.

The new route will connect Belém with the busiest airport city in Latin America: the Colombian city of El Dorado, which annually receives about 45 million passengers. The new direct operation between Belém and Bogotá, the Colombian capital, will start on October 27.

There will be three weekly frequencies, operated by Airbus A320 aircraft, with a capacity of over 180 passengers, representing a total offer of more than 1,000 seats per week. The new flight will operate from Belém to Bogotá on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while the Bogotá to Belém route will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Governor Helder Barbalho: airport should be a reference for the Amazon

'Another tourism strategy for Pará,' highlights Helder Barbalho

Governor Helder Barbalho reiterates the initiative as another important achievement for the state tourism strategy. "Our goal is to position Belém International Airport as a distribution hub for flights, with a reference for the Amazon and Northern Brazil,” he said during the announcement of the new airline route.

"We are talking about an important step for the legacy of COP. We already have high expectations for demand for the event, but we are thinking beyond. We want COP 30 to leave as a legacy for Belém and Pará a new position in the international tourism scenario,” emphasized the governor.

The flight will depart from Bogotá at 7:55 PM and from Belém at 8:50 PM, informed Avianca's CRO, Claudio Vélez. "These are convenient times for those who wish to connect to other destinations. From Bogotá, it will be possible to directly access cities like Madrid, Paris, New York, Toronto, Cancun, and several South American capitals. Additionally, passengers will be able to continue to the west coast of the United States, via El Salvador, with connections to Los Angeles and San Francisco,” he said.

According to Claudio Vélez, tickets are expected to go on sale on July 24, and regular operations are confirmed for the end of October, coinciding with the international high season and the increase in visitor flow for COP 30 in Belém in November this year.

“We are convinced that we have a great opportunity to sell many international destinations to the people of Pará and, at the same time, attract foreign visitors to Brazil from Bogotá,” added the executive.

Avianca's CEO, Frederico Pedreira, emphasized that "this new operation will allow thousands of visitors from around the world to easily reach Belém, before COP30 and beyond, and will give the city a new opportunity to connect with the Americas and Europe,” he said.

“This is an important bet for Avianca. Belém allows us to connect passengers to a wide network of destinations. Our idea is to start with three flights a week, test market acceptance, and if demand responds positively, we are already evaluating the possibility of increasing frequencies. We want to establish a lasting presence here,” stated Frederico Pedreira.

He added: “Thanks to our collaboration with the Province of Pará, we are very pleased to announce a new route to continue connecting Brazil with Latin America and the world, this time from Belém, the gateway to the Amazon. At Avianca, we currently have nearly 50 weekly flights connecting São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Manaus, with over 80 destinations and 25 countries in the Americas and Europe, via Bogotá. Undoubtedly, this new operation will allow thousands of visitors from around the world to easily reach Belém, before COP30 and beyond, because this route serves the purpose of connecting northern Brazil and that is why it is here to stay,” said the CEO of Avianca.

The expansion of Pará's international air network was also highlighted by the State Secretary of Tourism (Setur), Eduardo Costa. "Air connectivity not only drives tourism but an entire economic chain: exports, logistics, technology, and international trade. It is a mechanism that feeds on the flow of people and goods. And Belém is ready to take on this new role,” said the secretary.

“The air network we are building will transform the State into a strategic point for international connections, especially with neighboring countries and the Caribbean. This also favors nature tourism, ecotourism, and scientific tourism, niches that are growing globally,” explained the head of Setur.

In December 2024, the State enacted Law No. 10,838, which authorizes the granting of economic subsidies to airlines that implement new international routes at Pará airports. Decree No. 4,558/2025, published in March of this year, regulated the criteria for granting the benefit, such as the minimum requirement of two weekly flights with aircraft of at least 180 seats.

“This opportunity arose thanks to the sensitivity of the state government in generating new international connections. The subsidy law allows for financial support during the first months of operations, ensuring commercial viability for the initiative. We are confident that this will not be a seasonal flight, but rather a permanent operation, with a strong economic and tourism impact for Pará,” concluded Eduardo Costa.
