The Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG), in Greater Belém, performed 1,425 medium and high complexity surgeries in the first half of 2025. The increase of 4.7% compared to the same period last year reflects the unit's commitment to expanding the population's access to specialized, safe, and quality public health.

Kamila Pacheco Rosa, nursing coordinator of the hospital, explains that this advancement is the result of continuous improvements implemented in the surgical center, such as the modernization of equipment, optimization of schedules, and constant investment in the training of multidisciplinary teams.

"The integration between the care and administrative sectors, combined with technological innovations, allows us to achieve greater productivity without compromising quality and safety, which are priorities at all stages of care," emphasizes the nurse.

Among the main procedures performed are: removal of plates and screws; osteosyntheses; bone lengthening; and video surgeries, such as videolaryngology and removal of double J catheter.

"These interventions restore quality of life and autonomy to those who faced physical limitations and pain that compromise their routine. Each surgery represents a renewed hope of resuming simple daily activities with more health and well-being," adds nurse Kamila Rosa.

Quality and safety

Managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), Galileu is accredited with the ONA 3 seal — the highest level of certification in quality and hospital safety in Brazil – Excellence Degree.

The unit adopts a rigorous routine of care safety, with constant training, internal audits, practical simulations, and systematic checking protocols.

"Safety practices are essential to ensure the quality of results. We perform checks at all stages of the surgical process, always focusing on patient safety," states Kamila.

She also highlights that recent structural improvements have contributed to the advancements. "The acquisition of new equipment for video surgery, improvements in the surgical environment, modernization of the anesthetic park, and the restructuring of the Central Material and Sterilization (CME) have brought more agility and efficiency to care processes," she evaluates.

Integrated network and new goals

Another essential factor for the increase in the number of surgeries was the integration with the State Regulation Center (CER), which ensures transparent and equitable access for patients, prioritizing the most urgent cases and optimizing the use of public resources.

"The partnership with regulation has been fundamental to ensure that each vacancy serves those who need it most, strengthening the care flow with efficiency and responsibility," reinforces the coordinator.

For the second half of 2025, the hospital plans to expand surgical schedules, strengthen teams, and implement new flows to further qualify care in the pre and post-operative phases.

"Our focus is to expand access with safety, resoluteness, and humanization. More than numbers, each surgery represents a story of overcoming and reinforces the role of Galileu Hospital as an agent of social transformation through public health," concludes Kamila Pacheco Rosa.
