During the patrolling and inspection of vessels on the Tajapuru River, in Breves, at the end of the afternoon on Monday (21), the integrated team operating at the “Antônio Lemos” River Base seized 82 stolen cell phones and caught the person responsible for the equipment in the act. The merchandise was being transported on the vessel ‘F/B Maria Evanir’, originating from Santana in Amapá and destined for the capital of Pará, Belém.

According to information from the police team involved in the operation, during a personal search inside the vessel, a man showed signs of nervousness and when questioned about what he had inside a black cooler, he claimed it was açaí, but during the inspection, 82 cell phones were found inside the cooler without any invoice or receipt of purchase or sale.

The man was interrogated about the equipment and stated that they were stolen in the State of Amapá and were being brought to Belém. He was arrested for the crime of qualified theft.

For the head of the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado, the security strategy in the river network is precisely to curb any and all illicit activities that may occur, therefore the inspections are essential to also prevent irregular cargo from being transported on vessels.

“This time, a man was caught in the act transporting 82 cell phones inside a cooler, both stolen items, but we have also seized other electronic equipment, tires, fish, all without documentation, which also constitutes illicit activities. Therefore, the inspection of the security system alongside agencies such as Sefa, Federal Revenue, and also environmental agencies helps us to increasingly curb illicit practices,” he stated.

After the inspection and seizure on the vessel, the man and the cell phones were taken to the Antônio Lemos Base, and then taken to Breves where they were presented at the Civil Police Station of the municipality for the completion of all necessary procedures.

More actions - Candiru Base

The Candiru Base, located in Óbidos, in the Lower Amazon, also continues with daily inspections to combat crime. Last Friday, the 18th, agents from the River Group in conjunction with the Military and Civil Police, Fire Department, and Federal Revenue seized 23 tires of various sizes during an inspection on the vessel E/Balsa Gabriela, which was navigating the Amazon River from Manaus to Santarém.

During the inspection, Federal Revenue inspectors located the cargo without import documentation. The merchandise was seized and taken to the Federal Revenue headquarters in Óbidos for legal procedures.
