Investments in public safety keep Belém out of the ranking of the most violent capitals
In six years, the government of Pará invested R$ 13 billion in integration actions, increasing personnel, purchasing equipment and vehicles, and expanding the workforce

Noted in 2018 as one of the most violent capitals in the country, Belém is out of the 2024 ranking, according to data released by the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Safety. With an average of 26.4 Intentional Violent Deaths (MVI) per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to an average rate of 70.7 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2018, Belém today lives a very different reality.
The changes deepened over the last six years, with investments, integration, and strategic intelligence activities in the security forces, as explained by the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado.
"It is very important to highlight the progress that the state has made in recent years regarding crime numbers, and thus, to manage to remove the state capital from among the ten most violent in the country, as it was in 2017 and 2018. This is the result of integrated work, the commitment of security agencies, especially in actions developed in the metropolitan region of Belém, where we have achieved great successes in combating violent crime. The work is also the result of a more present police force, with precise investigations by the Civil Police, greater prison control, quality technical expertise, all resulting in a greater confrontation of violent crimes and the results that have been obtained," he said.

Monitoring - The monitoring of crime rates is carried out constantly by the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), through the Deputy Secretary of Intelligence and Criminal Analysis (Siac). According to data from the Secretary, the state capital recorded a 66.97% decrease in Violent Crimes compared to 2018.
When the numbers encompass the state, this decrease is 53.3% compared to six years ago, indicating that the strategies adopted by the current public security management result in the reduction of violent crimes and the confrontation of crime.

In six years, Pará has been a national highlight in public safety and crime reduction. Considering the year 2018 to today, the state has preserved more than 10,000 lives of Pará residents. The result is the fruit of strong integrated work from public security forces, in addition to the significant investments made by the Government of Pará, which prioritizes the safety of Pará citizens, as well as the appreciation and qualification of its public agents.
Since 2019, the current administration has invested more than R$13 billion in public safety. These resources ensured the increase of personnel, the opening of nine public competitions, and more than 8,500 positions for public security agents. During this period, there was an increase in new vehicles, equipment with better technologies, and cutting-edge weapons. There was reconstruction and delivery of new police units, acquisition of body cameras for public agents. 100 security totems with cameras operated by artificial intelligence and emergency services accessible to the population were implemented.
