The State Department of Education (Seduc) held, this Wednesday (30), the training "Paths to Mental Health in Schools", an initiative aimed at training education professionals to deal with issues related to mental and emotional health in the school environment. The event, a result of a partnership between the Government of Pará, through Seduc, and the Mapfre Foundation, aimed to strengthen the reception and care for students, contributing to the construction of a healthier, more empathetic, and inclusive educational space.

The training brought together directors, vice-directors, teachers, psychologists, and social workers from the public education network, and sought to prepare educators to identify signs of psychological suffering among students, as well as to adopt listening and support strategies that favor the integral development of students. Among those present was Danielli Pinheiro, vice-pedagogical director of the José de Assis Ribeiro School.

“It is essential when we talk about professional qualification. It is extremely necessary to promote this debate because it is a very current topic, especially considering the reality of our schools. We have many students with different needs, and this requires us to be more assertive and empathetic in our approach. For this, it is fundamental to have the appropriate knowledge to act more effectively, respecting the specificity of each student. And it was very good, the speeches were very expressive, presented by the professor. It is truly an excellent topic, very pertinent and necessary to be discussed,” said the participant.

According to Mário Augusto Almeida, who is at the head of the Diversity and Inclusion Directorate (DDI), bringing this type of training is essential to create a more welcoming and healthy environment for the entire school community.

“The training is part of one of the axes of the Educational Coexistence Advisory and highlights the fundamental importance of mental health in the teaching and learning process. It is essential to understand that mental health is the foundation for learning to occur more smoothly and effectively. When a student has balanced mental health, understands their emotions, recognizes the complexity of their life, and demonstrates empathy, both for themselves and for others, they can learn better and relate to the world in a healthier way, through life experiences,” emphasizes the director.

Learning gains greater meaning when the teacher realizes that it goes beyond theory or explanation on the board. The same applies to mental health: when we can create spaces where children feel welcomed, understood, and safe to deal with their emotions, they learn better. It is in this balance between the emotional and the cognitive that the school transforms into a true place of development and care.

“Talking about mental health in schools is fundamental, especially in light of the challenges faced by teachers and managers. The presence of psychologists and social workers has been an important support, and this is a growing area of action. Being close to these professionals, understanding their needs, and contributing with new knowledge is essential. I make available the material and research from our project, with the aim of strengthening mental health in schools and, with that, education because, without mental health, there is no learning,” said the adjunct professor of the Department of Collective Health at the Paulista School of Nursing of the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), Anderson Rosa.

The training will continue to the municipality of Marabá, scheduled for August 8, and to Santarém on the 28th.
