The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, president of the Inter-State Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon, welcomed on Tuesday (12), at the Government Palace, the governors of the Amazon states in a preparatory meeting for the XVII Meeting of the National Governors' Forum, which will be held on Wednesday (13), in Belém.

The meeting aimed to align strategic agendas of the region focusing on sustainability, productive development, and joint action of the states during the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30), which will take place in November, in the capital of Pará.

During the meeting, which was attended by the executive secretary of the Consortium, Marcello Brito, Helder Barbalho emphasized the importance of the integrated action of the Legal Amazon in defending regional interests.

“We had the opportunity to gather the consortium to discuss partnerships and strategic points. We are building a unified presentation of the Amazon to the world at COP 30, consolidating policies aimed at sustainable production and valuing our region. We need to show our strength and defend the priority strategies of the Amazon states,” said the governor.

The governors also reinforced their collective commitment to holding COP 30 in Belém, which will be the largest climate event in the world. “The topic of the moment is COP 30. We came to declare our support for the state of Pará and Governor Helder so that we can hold the best COP in history. It is an event for Brazil, but especially for the Amazon,” declared the governor of Tocantins, Wanderlei Barbosa.

For the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, the unity of the Amazon states is essential. "The consortium plays a fundamental role at this moment. We discussed the advances of the technical chambers and the proposals we will take to COP 30. Our region is challenging, but it also holds solutions for facing climate change. We need to be united to be heard strongly,” he stated.

The governor of Acre, Gladson Cameli, highlighted the effort of the Government of Pará in preparing the infrastructure for the event. “It is important to see up close the work that Pará is doing to host COP 30. Although it is an international event, the state government is doing its part responsibly. We hope this conference reinforces the importance of the Amazon on the global stage, promotes inclusion, and reduces inequalities,” he said.
