Hyperbaric Medicine Center of the Metropolitan Hospital performs over 11 thousand sessions
Delivered by the Government of Pará in August 2024, this unprecedented service in the SUS accelerates the recovery process of severe injuries, including complex and hard-to-heal wounds.
In its first year of operation, the Hyperbaric Medicine Center of the Metropolitan Hospital of Urgency and Emergency (HMUE), in Ananindeua (Metropolitan Region of Belém), has been transforming the lives of patients and reducing recovery times for those with various clinical conditions, especially complex and hard-to-heal wounds.
Since its delivery by the Government of Pará in August 2024, the Center has recorded over 11 thousand sessions performed, benefiting patients from various municipalities in the State, through the Unified Health System (SUS). The treatment with hyperbaric oxygen consists of inhaling pure oxygen at 100% in a pressurized chamber, significantly increasing the supply of oxygen in the tissues, accelerating healing processes, and aiding in the fight against infections.

“It is an immense pride for all of us. Hyperbaric Medicine is a high-impact therapeutic resource, capable of transforming the outcomes for patients who often arrive in serious conditions, and here they find new perspectives for recovery. It is proof that technology and humanization can walk together, enhancing care and reinforcing the excellence of the service provided at the Metropolitan,” highlighted Marcelo Azevedo, executive director of HMUE, a health unit of the Government of Pará, managed by the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH).
According to Ivete Vaz, Secretary of State for Public Health, the Center is an achievement for the State. "The Center helps people to be attended to quickly, using technology to serve those in need of urgent care. It is an achievement that benefits the population of Pará, providing quality care to those in need," emphasized the head of Sespa.

Result – Patient Maria Nojosa, 41 years old, a resident of Belém, has been in treatment for two months after suffering a burn. “The hyperbaric treatment has helped me a lot. The healing is progressing well, there are parts that are already well healed. I had no knowledge about hyperbaric treatment; I didn't even know it existed. I think it's very good! I see the results every day that passes,” reported Maria.
Humberto Silva, 70 years old, also a resident of Belém, has been undergoing sessions for five months to treat a foot injury. “I am very satisfied. The care is very humanized, everything is well organized. No one has to wait a long time to be attended to. I have noticed a lot of improvement,” he informed.
The coordinator of the Hyperbaric Medicine Center, Dielle Oliveira, emphasized the importance of the service to expand access to specialized treatment. “Each session performed represents a real chance to accelerate recovery and restore quality of life to our patients. Seeing the evolution of each case is extremely rewarding for the entire team, which dedicates itself daily to provide safe, humanized, and effective care,” she reiterated.

The Metropolitan Hospital is a reference in medium and high complexity care. The implementation of Hyperbaric Medicine reinforces Sespa's commitment to offering modern, effective, and accessible treatments to the population.
