Integrated action strengthens supervision and protection in the Serra dos Martírios/Andorinhas State Park and Araguaia Environmental Protection Area
The main objective of the operation was to reinforce the protection of local fauna and flora, as well as to ensure that tourist visitation occurs in an orderly, safe, and responsible manner.

On August 16 and 17, the Pará Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio) carried out an environmental monitoring and supervision action in the Serra dos Martírios/Andorinhas State Park and the Araguaia Environmental Protection Area (APA), in São Geraldo do Araguaia, southeastern Pará region. The activity was developed in partnership with the Environmental Police Battalion (BPA), the 3 Quedas enterprise, and also with the support of accredited trail guides.
The main objective of the operation was to reinforce the protection of local fauna and flora, as well as to ensure that tourist visitation occurs in an orderly, safe, and responsible manner. During the action, the BPA imposed fines related to environmental infractions detected, in accordance with current legislation, such as Federal Decree No. 6,514/2008, which regulates the Environmental Crimes Law.
According to Laís Mercedes, the manager of the Araguaia Administrative Region of Ideflor-Bio, the operation also had an educational character. “We are on a mission of environmental monitoring, raising awareness among our visitors about the obligation to be accompanied by accredited trail guides. Those who disrespect this regulation are subject to penalties, as provided in the Integrated Management Plan,” she explained.

Environmental Awareness - The presence of the Environmental Police was essential to curb illegal practices. Corporal Ana Moraes, a member of the BPA, emphasized that the action had both supervisory and preventive character. “We are here to verify possible illicit activities, apply appropriate measures, such as citations and fines, but also to guide the population on what is permitted within the APA and the State Park. Visitation must occur within legality and with respect for environmental regulations,” she stated.
Ideflor-Bio technician Carla Oliveira highlighted the importance of the work of accredited guides for the safety of visitors and the conservation of the area. “Our guides are trained in partnership with the Pará Tourism Secretariat, with training on accident prevention and knowledge of local biodiversity. They are essential for ensuring that visitation is conducted responsibly and sustainably, guaranteeing not only the integrity of visitors but also the preservation of ecosystems,” she emphasized.
During the two days of action, the teams traversed trails, visitation points, and areas of higher tourist flow, guiding visitors and reinforcing the rules set forth in the Integrated Management Plan of the two conservation units. Ideflor-Bio reinforces that entering trails without an authorized guide is prohibited and subject to fines.
Laís Mercedes concludes by stating that the operation was considered an important step in the integration between environmental protection agencies, security forces, and local communities. “In addition to preventing illegal practices, our initiative strengthens sustainable tourism in the region, valuing the scenic beauty of the Park and the APA, without compromising its biodiversity,” concluded the manager.
