The 28th Pan-Amazon Book Fair and Multivoices dedicated a special program on Thursday (21) to the memory of Cabanagem, with panels, discussion circles, and audiovisual projections that promoted reflections on justice, citizenship, and Amazonian identity. The initiative, organized by the Government of Pará through the State Secretariat of Culture (Secult), highlighted academic, artistic, and popular voices that study and represent the cabano movement as a symbol of resistance and popular participation.

The activities took place at the Multivoices Arena, one of the main dialogue spaces of the Fair, bringing together researchers, creators, and visitors around the historical and symbolic importance of Cabanagem for the social and political formation of the region.

Audiovisual projections and female protagonism

At 4:30 PM, the discussion circle “Cabanas Projections: Representations of Cabanagem in Pará Audiovisual” brought together researchers Eliana Ramos and Paulo Evander, mediated by Fábio Horácio Castro. The debate discussed how the movement is portrayed in films and local productions, exploring the role of audiovisual in building collective memory.

Eliana Ramos presented her research on female participation in Cabanagem, a theme that inspired a documentary directed by Adriana de Paris. “It is extremely important that the female participation in such a relevant revolt for our history is visually transmitted to the public. I have dedicated my life to this and reaffirm that we need to know our history,” she emphasized.

Researchers deepen the meanings of the revolt

Concluding the evening program, at 7 PM, researchers Magda Ricci and Aldrin Figueiredo led a chat about the multiple meanings of Cabanagem. Ricci addressed the historical context of the revolt, while Figueiredo brought cultural and symbolic interpretations of the movement.

“Cabanagem was, above all, a struggle for the rights of a marginalized population, cabocla and Afro-Indigenous, that was separated from political and economic power. This movement became a landmark in the search for freedom and citizenship in the 19th century,” highlighted Aldrin Figueiredo.

Historical documents and access to memory

Throughout the day, the public could visit the exhibition “Cabano People,” featuring pieces from the collection of the Public Archive of the State of Pará (APEP), which includes records and original documents about Cabanagem. According to the director of APEP, Leonardo Torii, the action seeks to democratize access to historical information.

“We have documents that show us how Cabanagem was multiple, in terms of popular participation. The public could visualize, touch the documents, and see a little bit of history. The fair is a great opportunity to popularize these historical records,” said Torii.

Other discussion circles deepen the theme

The Multivoices Arena started the program at 3 PM with the debate “Cabanagem - The Popular Revolution of the Amazon,” with Darcy Flexa Di Paolo and Ítalo Flexa Di Paolo, mediated by Wesley Nascimento. Following that, at 5:30 PM, the circle “The Judges of War and Peace: Justice, Citizenship, and Political Mobilization in the Context of Cabanagem” featured researcher Letícia Barriga and debater Dani Moura, mediated by Leonardo Torii.

Present at the activities, nutritionist Nívea Kassandra reported that she sought the program on Secult's social media to learn more about the topic.

“It is a subject that interests me a lot because it concerns our own history. The more we seek to read and inform ourselves, the more we can acquire critical sense,” she stated.
