Social Assistance ensures comprehensive care at the Metropolitan Polyclinic in Belém
State Government unit strengthens humanized care and inclusion in access to health, with a specialized and multidisciplinary team
At the Metropolitan Polyclinic of Pará, in Belém, the work of social assistance is an essential pillar to ensure comprehensive, humanized, and inclusive care for patients. The state government unit has a specialized team that works daily to ensure that users have access not only to medical care but also to social resources that enhance their quality of life.
Social worker Karina Nogueira explains that the work goes far beyond listening: “We use qualified listening to identify the social needs of the patient and, whenever necessary, we mediate with support networks, seeking to minimize the journey to access services such as medications, diapers, transportation for treatment, as well as social and welfare benefits.”
Karina also details that, in light of the challenges faced by the public health network, the work of social assistance becomes even more relevant. “Many patients do not find the necessary structure in their municipalities, which forces them to travel, often long distances, to Belém. This generates high demand, waiting lines, and the need for effective public policies that ensure broader and faster access,” she points out.
Guidelines
The sector follows legal guidelines, such as Law 10.048/2000, which establishes priority care for certain groups, and provides individualized social reception, ensuring that priority cases receive timely and appropriate attention.
“Every time we manage to facilitate patients' access to the necessary services, it is a clear example that our interventions were effective and had a positive impact on the user's well-being,” highlights the social worker.
Project Cocoon
Among the highlighted initiatives is the Cocoon Project, implemented in 2022, which offers comprehensive and humanized care to transgender people. The program has a multidisciplinary team composed of doctors, psychologists, and social workers, ensuring consultations, exams, and even surgical procedures, such as masculinizing mastectomy and breast implants.
“The Cocoon represents an important milestone for the promotion of health and well-being of transgender people in Pará,” affirms Karina.
In addition to providing guidance on social benefits and rights, the social assistance at Poli ensures that each patient is aware of their duties and access to public health policies. “Our work directly reflects on the improvement of quality of life and the satisfaction of users' needs,” reinforces Karina Nogueira.
