"Retrato de um certo Oriente", directed by Marcelo Gomes, is one of the highlights of the programming

The Cine Líbero Luxardo, located at the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP) in Belém, begins its new programming this Thursday (4). With national and international titles, the week's premiere is the acclaimed drama "Retrato de um certo Oriente" by director Marcelo Gomes, which debuts at 8 PM. The week's programming also includes the double feature of the films: "O último azul", winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and the American horror film "A hora do mal" by Zach Cregger.

Having its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival in the Netherlands, "Retrato de um certo Oriente" was also screened and acclaimed by specialized critics at the Rio Festival and the São Paulo International Film Festival. Being one of the 16 films eligible to represent Brazil in the "Best International Feature" category at the 2026 Oscars, the film is an adaptation of the book by Milton Hatoum, "Relato de um certo Oriente", released in 1989 and winner of the Jabuti Prize for "Best Novel".

Set in post-war Amazonia, the film portrays - in black and white - the story of two Catholic siblings, Emilie and Emir, who embark on a journey to Brazil in search of better days. During the journey, Emilie falls in love with a Muslim merchant, Omar. Emir suffers from uncontrollable jealousy and will use their religious differences to separate them.

Double feature of "O último azul" and "A hora do mal" in the city's most charming theater

"O último azul" tells the story of Tereza, 77, forced by the government to move to a colony for the elderly

Set in an industrial city in the Amazon, "O último azul" tells the story of Tereza, a 77-year-old woman forced by the government to move to a compulsory housing colony for the elderly - a place where old age is segregated in the name of youth productivity.

Before her exile, Tereza decides to embark on a journey through the Amazonian rivers and tributaries in search of a final wish. It is during this journey that she encounters the mystical blue snail, a legendary creature whose neon-blue slime is said to reveal the future to anyone who drips it in their eyes.

Set in an industrial city in the Amazon, the film, which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, reaffirms Mascavo's provocative style, which had already made an impact with "Boi Neon" (2015) and "Divino Amor" (2019). Here, he satirizes ageism and the excesses of the capitalist system, wrapping social criticism with fantastic elements and hypnotizing visuals. The film touches on themes such as free will, vitality, and the right to age with dignity, all through powerful dialogues and symbolism that invites reflection.

"A hora do mal" features a star-studded cast

In "A hora do mal", the mystery begins when 17 children from the same classroom disappear simultaneously during the night - all except one. The mass disappearance creates an atmosphere of paranoia and despair in a small community, while desperate attempts to understand what happened reveal increasingly disturbing layers.

With a star-studded cast, including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Austin Abrams, the film bets on a fragmented, tense, and visually powerful narrative. The bold and original script combines psychological horror, social criticism, and supernatural elements, consolidating Cregger as one of the great promises of contemporary horror cinema.

The film is also a resounding box office success: with over $80 million grossed at the global box office in just the first few days of release - more than double the production budget. The critical reception is also impressive: 95% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare A- rating on CinemaScore, especially for a film of the genre.
