The municipalities of Belém, Afuá, Monte Alegre, São Geraldo do Araguaia, and Almeirim feature Environmental Parks, maintained by the State Government, that preserve biodiversity and boost sustainable tourism in Pará. This Friday (5), the Amazon Day is celebrated, which is acknowledged in the daily operations of these spaces, essential for leisure and environmental education.

The parks are Conservation Units (UC) for the integral protection of existing ecosystems, so housing is not allowed within these areas. However, around the parks, various traditional communities live, such as riverside dwellers, indigenous peoples, and quilombolas, who have a historical and cultural relationship with the territory.

BELÉM - In just the first half of 2025, over 320,000 people visited the Utinga State Park - “Camillo Vianna”, in Belém. The Conservation Unit, managed by the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio), in partnership with the Social Organization Pará 2000, offers leisure experiences such as ecological trails, extreme sports, observation points, cafes, and social areas.

In preparation for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém in November, Ideflor-Bio is increasing investments in the Park, with the construction of a new Visitor Support Center, featuring a museum, auditorium, cafes, and administrative areas, as well as trail maintenance, installation of new signage, and hydration and contemplation points.

MARAJÓ – The Charapucu State Park, in the Municipality of Afuá, is characterized by an ecosystem of floodplain and igapó vegetation, preserved, with areas never explored, and presents peculiar characteristics of the Amazon. The UC aims to preserve natural ecosystems and scenic beauty, conduct scientific research, and develop ecological tourism and environmental education in the Marajó Archipelago.

BAIXO AMAZONAS - The Monte Alegre State Park is globally recognized by the “2022 World Monuments Watch”, an international program that recognizes cultural heritage worldwide. The park has rock paintings and biodiversity, which have been studied for decades, contributing to the understanding of pre-Columbian history in the Amazon.

CARAJÁS – Located just 20 km from the urban area of São Geraldo do Araguaia, in the southeastern region of the State, the Serra dos Martírios/Andorinhas State Park has a privileged location in the transition zone between the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. One of the main features of the space is the more than 30 cataloged waterfalls.

ALMEIRIM - The State Park of the Giant Trees of the Amazon, in the Paru State Forest, in Almeirim, was created to protect the largest tree in Latin America and one of the largest in the world, a red angelim (Dinizia excelsa) measuring 88.5 meters in height. The announcement of the creation of the space was made in 2024 by Governor Helder Barbalho.

"The creation and management of these parks reflect our commitment to environmental preservation and respect for traditional communities. The Giant Trees Park symbolizes a new chapter in the protection of our biodiversity, which will only be possible with the effective participation of society and integrated work between the public authorities and local residents," emphasizes Nilson Pinto, president of Ideflor-Bio.
