In order to prevent, curb, and stop practices that may result in the collection or destruction of wildlife specimens, as well as alterations to the ecosystems of the Tabuleiro do Embaubal Wildlife Refuge (Revis) in Senador José Porfírio, in southwestern Pará, a joint operation was carried out between the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio), the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate, and Sustainability (Semas-PA), and the Environmental Police Command (CPA).

The site is considered one of the largest turtle nesting sites in the region

The Revis Tabuleiro do Embaubal is one of the most important areas for the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity. Recognized for housing extensive beach areas, the site is considered one of the largest nesting sites for turtles in the region, especially for the species Podocnemis expansa, popularly known as the Amazon turtle. The ecological relevance of the conservation unit requires constant monitoring and inspection to ensure the integrity of habitats and the protection of endangered species.

During the operation, teams patrolled the main critical points of the protected area, inspecting hard-to-access areas and guiding riverside communities on the importance of preserving local fauna and flora. The action also aimed to curb illegal activities, such as hunting, predatory fishing, and unauthorized exploitation of natural resources.

Prevention - According to 3rd Sergeant Luís Otávio from the Environmental Police Battalion (BPA), the presence of security forces has a direct effect on preventing environmental crimes. “This type of operation strengthens the sense of vigilance and inhibits the practice of illegal activities within the conservation unit. Our role is to ensure that the environmental heritage of Pará is protected for future generations,” highlighted the public security agent.

In addition to patrolling activities, environmental agents reinforced environmental education actions, engaging with the local population about the importance of conserving the Revis. The idea, above all, is to raise awareness among communities to become allies in protecting biodiversity, reporting illegal practices and adopting sustainable behaviors.

Integration - The manager of the Xingu Administrative Region of Ideflor-Bio, Marco Aurélio Oliveira, emphasized the role of integrated operations in maintaining the ecological integrity of the Revis. “The joint presence of Ideflor-Bio, Semas, and CPA ensures greater effectiveness in addressing threats to fauna and the ecosystem. This union of efforts reinforces the State's commitment to managing conservation units and strengthening environmental policy in Pará,” he stated.

It is worth noting that the inspection work is part of a set of management measures implemented by the Government of Pará, which includes remote satellite monitoring, field presence, and building partnerships with research institutions and civil society organizations.

Integrated operations contribute to maintaining the ecological integrity of the Revis

For the director of Management and Monitoring of Conservation Units at Ideflor-Bio, Ellivelton Carvalho, the inspection operations carried out in the Revis Tabuleiro do Embaubal represent an important step for the protection of the territory, while also strengthening the integrated action between environmental agencies and security forces. “Our expectation is that these actions will be intensified in the coming months, ensuring the preservation of one of the most valuable wildlife refuges in the Amazon,” he emphasized.
