The Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa) and the State Transplant Center (CET), held a mobilization for the Green September campaign on Friday (5) at the Olympic Stadium of Pará Journalist Edgar Proença, Mangueirão, in Belém. The initiative took place during the match between Paysandu and Volta Redonda in the Série B of the Brazilian Championship and aimed to raise awareness among the population about the importance of organ and tissue donation and to encourage dialogue within families on the subject.

Right at the beginning of the program, the campaign gained prominence: children who accompanied the players onto the field wore shirts related to the cause, while the athletes displayed a banner with the campaign's message. The stadium's big screen also reinforced the slogan: “Donating is sowing a new life.”

Biomedic Ierecê Miranda explains that September is dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation

According to CET biomedic Ierecê Miranda, Pará has made progress in donation numbers but still faces challenges due to the large waiting list. “The month of September is dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation, with the 27th marked as National Donor Day. We want to increase awareness, perform more transplants, and thus offer quality of life to people waiting for a donation,” she emphasized.

The biomedic reinforced the importance of discussing the topic within families. “When the loss of a loved one occurs, it is very difficult to make this decision without knowing the person's wishes. Therefore, it is essential that everyone expresses this desire to their family members. Being a donor is allowing life to continue,” stated Ierecê.

CET nurse Oziele Silva also highlighted the relevance of the action in public spaces. “Bringing this message to large events is essential, and the State has embraced this cause through partnerships,” she said.

For fan Karine Mesquita, mother of Josias Júnior, 7, who participated in the entry onto the field as a Lobinho member, the experience was emotional. “It is a very important initiative because it helps the population to better understand organ donation, which is a way to keep life present, even after someone has passed away,” she stated.

Regarding the game, Paysandu took the lead with a goal from Thalisson but ended up losing to the cariocas, who scored with Gabriel Barbosa and Raí, closing the score at 2 to 1.

Scenario in Pará
According to the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplants (ABTO), 73,937 people are waiting for a transplant in Brazil, with 1,296 in Pará. Between September 2024 and August 2025, CET recorded 232 notifications of brain death, of which 180 were eligible for donation. However, only 55 became effective donors due to 77 family refusals – an index of about 58%.

Between January and July 2025, Pará performed 266 transplants: 205 corneas, 36 kidneys, 16 bone marrow, six livers, and three osteomuscular. The numbers already surpass those of the previous year, which recorded 32 multiple organ donations. The decentralization of the process is also advancing, with regional hospitals trained to identify potential donors and support procurement in the interior.

How to be a donor
Anyone can be a potential organ and tissue donor. It is not necessary to register at a notary or in official documents: just inform the family of the desire to be a donor, as the authorization depends exclusively on the family members.
