Belém hosts Spanish Film Showcase from September 11 to 15 at Cine Líbero Luxardo, with free admission
The program is the result of a partnership between the State Government and the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain

The classic Cine Líbero Luxardo, located at the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP) in Belém, will host a Spanish Film Showcase from September 11 to 15, the result of a partnership between the State Government and the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Belém. With free admission, a total of 5 critically acclaimed European films will be screened.
With sessions always at 5:45 PM — except on Saturday (13), which starts at 5:35 PM — the showcase offers the public the opportunity to experience award-winning productions acclaimed by international critics, in one of the most traditional and charming cultural spaces in the city. The films on display are: “El 47”, by Marcel Barrena; “Vantagens de Viajar de Trem”, by Aritz Moreno; “Cerdita”, by Carlota Pereda; “Às Margens”, by director Juan Diego Botto, and “A Estrela Azul”, by Javier Macipe.
"The Spanish Film Showcase 2025 is being held this year in 17 Brazilian cities, bringing to Belém the best of current Spanish cinema. The showcase is in partnership with the Cultural Foundation of Pará and the State Government, important collaborators of the Embassy of Spain in Brazil," highlights Hansi Escobar, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of Spain, who will be present at the festival's opening next Thursday, the 11th.
“El 47”, directed by Marcel Barrena, opens the showcase with a powerful story set between the 1960s and 1970s, in the outskirts of Barcelona. The film portrays the reality of communities formed by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia who, despite having built their neighborhoods with their own hands, lived on the margins of the city, without access to basic services such as running water or electricity.

At the center of the plot is Manolo Vital, played by Eduard Fernández, a bus driver for Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona who, tired of the authorities' excuses, decides to prove, while driving line 47, that public transport can indeed reach those forgotten areas.
Another highlight is “Vantagens de Viajar de Trem”, by Aritz Moreno, a provocative work that mixes suspense, dark humor, and surrealism. The story begins when Helga, an editor in personal and professional crisis, returns from a psychiatric hospital where she has just admitted her husband.
On the train, she meets Ángel Sanagustín, a supposed psychiatrist who works at the same clinic, investigating mental disorders through the writings of his patients. During the journey, Ángel shares with Helga the disturbing story of Martín Urales de Úbeda, a paranoid patient obsessed with trash and other strange behaviors — initiating a narrative full of twists and turns.
“Cerdita”, by director Carlota Pereda, presents a tense and sensitive look at bullying, revenge, and the moral dilemmas of adolescence. The film follows Sara, a young girl who lives with obesity and suffers constant humiliation from other girls in her town. During the summer, everything changes when a mysterious man arrives in the village and kidnaps her aggressors. Sara witnesses the event but keeps the secret. Torn between reporting the crime or protecting her savior, she must confront her own ethical limits.
The social drama finds space in “Às Margens”, by actor and director Juan Diego Botto. The narrative follows 24 intense hours in the lives of three characters whose paths cross amid the pressure of severe economic problems. The film addresses the impact that financial stress has on family and emotional bonds, and how, even in adverse scenarios, affection and solidarity can still emerge as transformative forces.

Closing the showcase is “A Estrela Azul”, directed by Javier Macipe, which tells the true story of Spanish musician Mauricio Aznar, played by Pepe Lorente. In the 1990s, Aznar decides to leave the success of rock and embarks on a journey through Latin America in search of a new artistic purpose. During his time in Argentina, he meets Don Carlos, a veteran folk musician in decline who welcomes him as a master and musical partner. Together, they form an unlikely and moving duo, on a journey marked by cultural encounters, friendship, and the search for a deeper meaning for art.
