Hospital da Mulher do Pará performs 152 reconstructive plastic surgeries in six months
Procedures go beyond aesthetics, ensuring quality of life for women served by the public health system
The Hospital da Mulher do Pará, delivered by the state government on March 8, 2025, has achieved an impressive milestone in just six months of operation: 152 non-aesthetic plastic surgeries already performed. The procedures are part of the comprehensive care guaranteed by the Unified Health System (SUS), prioritizing rehabilitation, repair of sequelae, and improvement of the patients' quality of life.
Unlike aesthetic surgeries, which are solely aimed at beautification, the non-aesthetic plastic surgeries offered by SUS seek to restore compromised functions, correct congenital or acquired deformities, and alleviate physical symptoms that directly impact health. Among the most common cases are reconstructions after cancer, burns, or accidents, as well as reduction mammoplasty in women suffering from breast hypertrophy, a condition that can cause chronic pain, mobility difficulties, respiratory problems, and even skin injuries.
Mental health - The general director of the unit, Nelma Machado, emphasizes that the impact goes far beyond the physical aspect when it comes to reduction mammoplasty. “The surgery offered by the Hospital da Mulher do Pará goes far beyond an aesthetic surgery. It restores quality of life to these women. Mobility improves mental health because it restores self-esteem. Many patients suffer from allergies due to the constant use of tight bras that hurt the skin. So, it is not an aesthetic surgery; it is a reparative surgery,” she states.
An example of this transformation is patient Bianca Santos, 24, who recently underwent reduction mammoplasty at the Hospital. The procedure removed almost two kilograms of breast tissue, bringing immediate physical relief and the expectation of significant gains in self-esteem and well-being.
“After the surgery, my life changed completely. Today, I live without those back pains that accompanied me every day. I feel lighter and more confident,” Bianca assures.
Positive impact - Of the 152 plastic surgeries, 68 were non-aesthetic female reduction mammoplasties, representing one of the main demands of the Hospital da Mulher.
Plastic surgeon Milton Fernandes, who is part of the health unit's team, reinforces the importance of the procedure: “Reduction mammoplasty has a direct impact on quality of life, alleviating back, lumbar, and shoulder pain, all related to the excess weight of the breasts and the effort the body makes to support them,” he explains.
For Bianca Santos, the results are already part of her routine. “My self-esteem has improved in an incredible way, and even in the simple things of everyday life, I notice the difference. I have more energy, I feel renewed and at peace with life,” she adds.
She also emphasizes her gratitude for the care received at the Pará government unit, highlighting that “it was a process of courage, but it was worth every step. Today, I can say that this decision transformed not only my body but also my mind and my heart. I am very grateful to the Hospital da Mulher and the Government of Pará for making this dream possible. I want this transformation to serve as inspiration for other women who are also struggling.”
Access to quality of life - With this performance in just half a year of operation, the Hospital da Mulher do Pará establishes itself as a state reference in specialized and high-complexity surgical procedures aimed at women's health.
The unit reaffirms its mission to guarantee universal and free access to treatments that transform women's lives, offering not only medical care but also dignity, support, and the opportunity to regain quality of life.
