The Government of Pará, through the Hospital da Mulher do Pará (HMPA), promoted an educational action on organ and tissue donation this Thursday (18). The initiative is part of the national September Green campaign, which aims to raise awareness on the subject. The activity was held in the waiting room of the outpatient sector of the unit, with the goal of informing and sensitizing patients about the importance of this act of solidarity.

During the lecture, data and guidelines were presented on how to express the wish to be a donor, as well as clarifying common doubts among the audience. Ballet teacher Alana Gouveia, 22, highlighted that she was unaware of the legal ways to authorize donation and that the action sparked important reflections.

“I had no idea how I could authorize my organ donation after death. I always had this doubt and found the explanation very interesting because I will talk to my husband and pass on this information. My father had an accident and needed a donation, but it was blood, and my family already sought donors, but it was in this lecture that I remembered organ donation. We see distant cases on the internet, but up close, I had never heard of it,” she reported.

The initiative was also praised by Conceição de Aviz, 59, a resident of Ananindeua and a health professional. “I found it very important because I didn’t know that to declare myself a donor, I could include the information on my ID and also express this wish to my family. I imagine how many people suffer for years in waiting lines. With donation, it is already possible to relieve someone from that suffering,” she emphasized.

Actions that save lives

For the general director of HMPA, intensivist doctor Nelma Machado, the encouragement of the donation culture needs to be continuous and accessible to the population. “Organ and tissue donation is an act of generosity and solidarity essential to save lives. The role of education is crucial to foster the culture of donation, raising society's awareness of the importance of this act,” she reinforced.

The Hospital da Mulher do Pará is a unit of the State Government focused on comprehensive health care for women, with an emphasis on humanized care, diagnosis, and high-complexity treatments.
