During Climate Week NYC 2025, on this Monday (22), the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, emphatically defended the choice of the Amazon as the host for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place in Belém from November 10 to 21, 2025.

The statement was made during the panel "The Role of the Private Sector at COP30," an event that brought together representatives from the productive sector, government leaders, and climate experts. At the meeting, Helder invited the international community to understand the Amazonian reality and to work on building sustainable solutions for the region.

In his speech, the governor highlighted the symbolic and strategic importance of holding COP30 in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

"Everyone is invited to be in Belém. Look with less prejudice and understand that the courage to hold COP in the Amazon is the courage of those who know the challenge of living in the forest and the challenge of making the Amazon the solution for the planet," he stated.

Helder Barbalho also emphasized that the event will be built collectively, with active listening from civil society, academia, the productive sector, and traditional peoples. "With our feet on the forest ground, listening to society, universities, governments, companies, in the atmosphere of indigenous peoples, quilombolas, extractivists, who are the true guardians of the forest; those who preserve need to be supported to preserve this Amazon," he added.

Bioeconomy and low-emission economy

The governor also announced the delivery, in early October, of the first Bioeconomy and Innovation Park of the Amazon, in Belém. The space will be a center for business, research, and sustainable development, aimed at the industrialization of forest products and support for startups and green production chains.

"We have, among so many challenges, but above all, among so many solutions for Brazil and for the environment, the mission to build sustainable businesses and a low-emission economy," he reinforced.

During the panel, Helder Barbalho presented command, control, and inspection actions that have contributed to the reduction of deforestation in the State, as well as initiatives that promote sustainable land use. Among the highlights, he mentioned the Jurisdictional REDD+ System, a model built in dialogue with traditional peoples and communities for resource mobilization based on emissions reduction from avoided deforestation.

Another initiative mentioned was the expansion of traceability in the livestock chain in Pará, focusing on ensuring sustainable production and environmental responsibility.

Federal Government and productive sector highlight integration and transition

The Minister of Cities, Jader Filho, also participated in the panel and reinforced the federal government's commitment to the climate agenda. "There will be no climate justice without social justice," he stated. He highlighted public investments in urban electric transport and sustainable housing as examples of integrated actions between climate and urban development.

The president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA), Alex Carvalho, presented guidelines for a new regional development model, focusing on energy transition, digital transformation, and governance. "This guide is the result of extensive studies on our state and region, consolidating a new economic development model for our territory," he stated.

The panel also featured the presence of Ricardo Mussa, president of the Sustainable Business COP30 Council (SB COP), and Marcelo Thomé, vice president of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and president of the Amazon+21 Institute, strengthening the dialogue between the public and private sectors in building solutions for the Amazon.
