Santa Casa launches Manual and highlights interdisciplinary action in the identification and maintenance of potential organ donors
Prepared by professionals from various health fields who are part of the Intra-Hospital Commission for Organ and Tissue Donation (CIHDOTT) of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará Foundation and validated by the State Transplant Center (CET), the Manual for Maintaining Potential Donors was launched in both printed and digital versions this morning, the 25th, at the auditorium of the Health Education and Training Center (CETS), with the presence of representatives from the State Health Department of Pará (Sespa) and public and private health institutions in the State. The proposal is for the manual to serve as a reference for professionals who are part of CIHDOTTs throughout the state, as well as for those who are being trained to identify and maintain potential organ and tissue donors.
“This booklet aims to make this diagnosis clearer and help us with organ donation. Having this information at hand contributes to more hospital units in the state being able to carry out this work, being prepared for this signaling and maintenance. So, the vision is for these professionals to understand the importance of this and to have ease in dealing with this type of situation and then maintaining these potential donors, because it is necessary to keep these donors until the organ donation,” explained doctor Ana Beltrão.
The intensive care nurse Waylla Luz, who is part of the Cihdott/FSCMPA team, presented the manual and reinforced the importance of using the document by health professionals who are part of the multiprofessional team, who will have a permanent source of consultation, and more security for the family that decides on the donation.
“The manual is an information resource for interdisciplinary action that gives more credibility to the family that the patient is being cared for and that if they decide on the donation, all efforts will be made to ensure that this wish is fulfilled. It is a team effort and everyone should see themselves as protagonists of the whole,” she stated.
The launch preceded the I Interdisciplinary Forum on the Maintenance of Potential Donors, where health professionals from Santa Casa shared their experience working as a multiprofessional team in a hospital that operates in organ procurement and transplantation.
“Santa Casa began performing pediatric kidney transplants in 2019 and adult liver transplants in 2023, and in this context, the training and engagement of Cihdott to prepare our internal team contributed to the consolidation of this work, and today we also collaborate with the training of other institutions, with training conducted by our professionals and today with the launch of the booklet and the realization of this Forum,” said the assistant director of Santa Casa, Norma Assunção.
Since 2019, when the pediatric kidney transplant program at Santa Casa began, 42 transplants have been performed. Adult liver transplants started being performed at the hospital in 2023 and total 26. At least 40 pediatric patients and 21 adults are still waiting for kidney and liver transplants, respectively.
The event concluded with a recitation about donation with the participation of patients, companions, and health professionals from the Pediatric Renal Replacement Therapy Service of Santa Casa.
The launch of the manual and the realization of the forum are part of the September Green Campaign to encourage organ and tissue donation in Pará, promoted by the State Health Department of Pará, State Transplant Center, and Santa Casa.
