Partnership between Seap and Public Defender guarantees legal assistance to more than 270 detainees in Bragança
The "Citizenship in Prison" action reinforces access to Justice and dignity in the execution of sentences in the Caetés Region
More than 270 people deprived of liberty received legal assistance during the most recent edition of the Citizenship in Prison action, held on September 25 and 26, at the Custody and Reintegration Unit (UCR) of Bragança, in northeastern Pará. The initiative is the result of a partnership between the State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration (Seap) and the Public Defender's Office of the State of Pará (DPE-PA), through the Criminal Execution Directorate (DEC).
The action involved the entire management team and staff of the prison unit, as well as 14 defenders and technicians from DPE-PA, ensuring legal assistance to all 273 detainees at UCR Bragança.
Guarantee of rights in the penal system
According to the director of Criminal Execution at Seap, Lucas Bellard Pereira Mariúba, the joint work between the two agencies has expanded the reach of public policies for access to Justice in the Pará penitentiary system.
“These actions, consolidated even before the ‘Fair Sentence Plan’, were already aligned here in the state, with the aim of expanding access to justice and providing dignified conditions for serving sentences, as determined by the Penal Execution Law and the Federal Constitution,” said the director.
According to Lucas Mariúba, the action in Bragança reinforces the State's commitment to dignity and legality in penal execution. “Only at this event, the entire prison population of the unit was served, totaling more than 273 services provided by the Public Defender's Office of the State,” he emphasized.
Actions will be expanded
The previous edition of the Citizenship in Prison action was held at the Custody and Reintegration Unit of Salinópolis. According to Seap, other prison units are also scheduled to receive the mutirão, expanding the reach of the initiative in different regions of Pará.
The action is part of the state policy of valuing citizenship in the penitentiary system and directly contributes to the fulfillment of legal guidelines that guarantee the right to free legal assistance to people deprived of liberty.
