Hospital de Clínicas promotes playful action on patient safety
The action reinforces that patient safety is a shared responsibility between healthcare professionals and families

In the month dedicated to Patient Safety, the Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital (HC) in Belém developed, on this Monday (29), a special program aimed at the companions of pediatrics and the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. The initiative was carried out by the Hospital's Patient Quality and Safety Center (NQSP) and aimed to reinforce the role of families in the care process.

The nurse and coordinator of the NQSP, Milena Palheta, explained that this year the hospital chose to carry out the activity within the units, in a playful and participatory way, instead of an event in the auditorium, as in previous years.
“The Ministry of Health highlighted in 2025 the care for babies and children. Thinking about this, we brought the theme of user protagonism, using games and simple questions, so that the companions can actively participate. They are the last safety barrier, often identifying failures before they reach the patient,” she emphasized.

Among the participants was Ana Carolina Furtado, 25 years old, a resident of the Tapanã neighborhood in Belém, who accompanies her son Anthony Joaquim, two and a half years old, in his first hospitalization and first surgery at HC.
“I found the program important. I already knew some safety protocols, but here we can better understand our role. As a mother, I feel more secure to participate in the care,” she stated.
Also present was grandmother Ana Laura Machado, 38 years old, from Limoeiro do Ajuru, who accompanies her granddaughter Stella Laura, one year and two months old, hospitalized since the 7th, waiting for corrective heart surgery. For her, the activity helped clarify doubts.

“I already knew some safety goals, but here I learned more, such as the correct way to sanitize hands and medication care. It was very good, we start to feel part of the process,” she evaluated.
Patient Safety Goals — In the hospital environment, patient safety is a set of actions taken by healthcare professionals to reduce risks and ensure the best possible outcome, from admission to hospital discharge. To support this practice, the World Health Organization (WHO) established six global goals:
Goal 1: correctly identify the patient;
Goal 2: improve the effectiveness of communication;
Goal 3: improve the safety of high-alert medications;
Goal 4: ensure surgeries with the correct site of intervention, correct procedure, and correct patient;
Goal 5: reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections;
Goal 6: reduce the risk of falls and pressure injuries.
