On World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10, the Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), reinforces to the population that care for the mind must be continuous and accessible. Health units throughout the State are prepared to offer support and free care to those facing psychological suffering, anxiety, or other emotional demands.

The State Secretary of Public Health, Ivete Vaz, highlighted the importance of paying attention to the signals from the mind. “This date requires reflection so that we can pay more attention to the warnings from our mind that can resonate throughout the body. Recognizing the importance of mental health, challenging any stigma associated with the topic, and seeking support when necessary is essential for effectively dealing with these issues,” she stated.

Care close to home, without judgment

The mental health care network in Pará follows the community and territorial model outlined in the National Policy on Mental Health, Alcohol, and Other Drugs. Sespa's actions aim to break with the hospital-centric model, ensuring care close to the family, in the territory where the person lives.

According to Ana Paula Reis, director of Integral Health Care Policies at Sespa, respectful and non-judgmental support is essential for care. “Attentive and qualified listening, with understanding and empathy, prevents the worsening of suffering and allows the mental health professional to provide the necessary support for each case,” she explained.

The population can seek the Basic Health Units (UBS) and the 87 Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) distributed throughout the State. In these locations, the entry point is support, with a specialized team to guide and refer the user according to their needs.

Crises: know where to go

In more severe cases or emotional crises, care can be provided by:

Samu – 192 (mobile emergency)

24h UPAs (Emergency Care Units)

Psychiatric emergency service at the Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital in Belém

24h emotional support by phone 188

Even those who cannot initially seek a health service directly can find emotional support through the Life Valuation Center (CVV), a SUS partner. The service is free, confidential, and available by phone 188, 24 hours a day.
