Fapespa presents groundbreaking studies on environmental sustainability at a seminar this Friday
The event will bring together managers, researchers, and civil society to discuss the challenges and potential of the Legal Amazon and Marajó Island
The Amazon Foundation for Support of Studies and Research (Fapespa) will hold the Environmental Sustainability Seminar this Friday (17), starting at 9 a.m., at the institution's auditorium, located at Avenida Presidente Vargas, 670, Campina neighborhood, in Belém. The event aims to present the latest studies developed by the Directorate of Environmental Research and Studies (DIPEA), through the Coordination of Territorial Studies (CET), focusing on the production of scientific knowledge to support public policies aimed at the sustainable development of the region.
During the seminar, two important products will be launched: the Sustainability Bulletin of Marajó Island and the Sustainability Panel of the Legal Amazon. These materials are part of the Sustainability Atlas project and provide detailed analyses of the environmental and social conditions of these territories.
The bulletin on Marajó Island presents data indicating stability in the sustainability level of the archipelago between 2003 and 2023. The publication gathers information on relief, land cover, land use and occupation, as well as population and territorial data, offering a scientific basis for the formulation of public policies and environmental conservation actions.
“Our goal is to support territorial planning and management, providing a scientific basis for public policies and actions aimed at the local reality,” highlighted Maiara de Oliveira Cordeiro, coordinator of Territorial Studies at Fapespa.
The Sustainability Panel of the Legal Amazon presents the results of the Sustainability Barometer, a methodology that measures the level of human and ecosystem well-being in the nine states that make up the region. This edition of the research includes the entire state of Maranhão, expanding its scope and allowing for an integrated reading of the socio-environmental challenges and potentialities of the Amazon.
Science applied to public management
The director of Environmental Research and Studies at Fapespa, Luziane Cravo, emphasized the importance of the seminar as a space for articulation between science and public management. “The effort to hold this seminar and present these products to society and managers aims to provide information that can guide decisions in municipalities,” she stated.
According to coordinator Maiara Cordeiro, the initiative reaffirms Fapespa's role in producing knowledge applied to the Amazonian reality. “It is a concrete contribution to strengthen the integration between research, planning, and public policies in the region,” she added.
Sustainability Atlas
The Sustainability Atlas reaches its fifth edition with a trajectory of systematization and dissemination of strategic information about the Pará territory. Produced by a multidisciplinary team from CET/DIPEA, the project has already mapped areas such as Cotijuba Island, Mosqueiro, Caratateua, Combu, Onças Islands, among others located around Belém.
“These products are available on Fapespa's digital platform, easily accessible to seminar participants, municipal managers, and also for those who will come to Belém during the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30). Thus, we offer reliable references for those who wish to better understand these regions, including safety for conducting technical or tourist visits,” reinforced Luziane Cravo.
