Gas from Pará invests in the energy transition from Vila do Conde
Strategic, Vila do Conde Port celebrates 40 years and, with the GdP terminal, advances in productivity for industries and energy generation
The base of operations for the Gas Company of Pará (GdP) and essential for the development of large agricultural, industrial, and mining projects in the State, Vila do Conde Port (PVC) celebrates 40 years this Friday, October 24. A reference in the Amazon, PVC leads port movement in the North Region in 2025, according to data from the Federal Government.
Since 2023, Vila do Conde Port has gained prominence in the energy transition in Pará, with the activities of the Gas Company of Pará terminal and two thermoelectric plants powered by GdP's natural gas. The thermoelectric plants, managed by Celba – Barcarena Electric Plants – are: UTE Novo Tempo, with a generation capacity of 624 MW, in testing phases and expected to start operations by the end of 2025; and UTE Portocem, nearly three times larger than its sister plant, which will be one of the largest thermoelectric plants in Brazil, with a generation capacity of 1.6 GW and expected to operate in August 2026.
“Together, the two thermoelectric plants will generate 2.2 GW, ensuring energy and security for the entire National Integrated System, using GdP's natural gas as raw material, in yet another fundamental step in the State's energy transition,” highlights Flexa Ribeiro, CEO of the Gas Company of Pará. “It is from Vila do Conde that our natural gas can be taken to other municipalities, following the determination of Governor Helder and Vice Hana of 'Gas for All Pará',” he adds.
“The natural gas that arrives in Pará through Vila do Conde will transform our industries, transportation, and help in the country's energy transition. This means sustainable development, with a direct impact on the economy and the environment,” says Renan Maia, manager of Commercial Relations and Contract Management at CDP.
About R$ 6 billion has been invested in the construction of the two thermoelectric plants, positioning PVC as a key piece for the future of the country's energy sector, generating and supplying the SIN. For Maia, the introduction of natural gas is expected to positively impact the local industry, the transportation sector, and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, by replacing more polluting sources with cleaner alternatives.
Vila do Conde is a multipurpose terminal. In addition to containers and general cargo, it also handles liquid bulk, such as fuels, solid bulk, such as iron ore, copper, bauxite, and kaolin, project cargo, and natural gas, ensuring the port's position as the only public terminal with this structure in the North Region.
“The Docas Company of Pará has been strategically working to enhance this asset, with new investments in infrastructure, technology, and modernization. These actions reinforce the port's role as a fundamental logistical vector for the flow of production and for the economic development of the Amazon,” highlights Jardel Silva, CEO of CDP.
“We want to congratulate the 40 years that Vila do Conde Port has been contributing to the development of the industry and logistics of our State. Congratulations to the CDP board and all its employees for their dedication, always seeking greater efficiency for the largest port in northern Brazil,” concludes Flexa Ribeiro, president of the Gas Company of Pará.
