Leo Gandelman and OSTP present 'Songs of the Amazon Forest' at Theatro da Paz
Concert features a live backdrop of forest films, narrated by Ailton Krenak, and a repertoire that includes Villa Lobos, Radamés Gnatalli, and Tom Jobim
On the 16th (Sunday), saxophonist and flutist Leo Gandelman, along with the Symphony Orchestra of Theatro da Paz, will present the show “Songs of the Amazon Forest,” an open letter celebrating Brazil's cultural richness, at 8 PM, at Theatro da Paz, under the direction of conductor Miguel Campos Neto.
The show features a repertoire with compositions by Villa Lobos, Tom Jobim, Radamés Gnatalli, and Gandelman himself. The saxophonist explains that the repertoire was built to portray every detail present in the forest. “Each piece in the concert carries the sound of the forest, the waters, the whisper of the leaves, the strength of the peoples who resist and celebrate their existence there.”
For conductor Miguel, the choice of songs is a celebration and exaltation of music. “It celebrates Brazilian music and music inspired by the Amazon through the saxophone, with compositions made for saxophone and orchestra, such as the music of Tom Jobim and Heitor Villa Lobos, who wrote about the Amazon like no one else.”
The concert features a live backdrop composed of forest films and photos of indigenous peoples, produced by photographer Cafi, with art direction by Oskar Metsavaht and narration by Ailton Krenak. “We will present Brazilian concert music for saxophone and orchestra — which is already a rarity in itself — framed by an artistic work, where beautiful images of the forest, which we captured, are also shown, telling a powerful and sensitive story. It’s sound and image coming together to celebrate the Amazon in an exciting and unforgettable way,” emphasizes Leo.
Emotion - For the artist, it is very significant to bring the performance to the city at such an important moment. “The emotion of bringing this tour to Belém is immense. It’s returning close to the forest; the Amazon is our inspirational reason, at this moment of fulfilling the goals of the Paris Agreement. Being here, at COP 30, is more than a concert; it’s a reunion with what moves us and connects us to the world.”
Tickets cost R$ 2 and can be purchased starting at 6 PM on the 16th at the box office of Theatro da Paz (two units per person).
