The integration between logging concessions and community extractivism was the central theme of the panel "Forest Coworking: Integration of Logging Concessions and Community Extractivism in the State Forest (Flota) of Paru," presented this Wednesday (12) by the manager of Forest Contracts of the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity of the State of Pará (Ideflor-Bio), Cíntia Soares, and environmental analyst Jossiele Fernandes, during the programming of the Pará Pavilion at COP30 in Belém. The discussion highlighted how sustainable management and the bioeconomy can walk together in the conservation of the Amazon.

The initiative presented at the conference is developed in the Flota do Paru, in western Pará, and proposes a collaborative model in which the use of the forest is shared among different actors - logging concession companies and local communities that rely on extractivism. The proposal reinforces the role of the State in promoting sustainable practices that reconcile income generation and environmental conservation.

Standing Forest - According to Cíntia Soares, the "forest coworking" model demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile the economic use of the forest with the protection of biodiversity. "With this presentation, we show that it is possible to integrate the management of timber and non-timber products in the same location, such as in the Flota do Paru, where there is coexistence between those who manage timber products and pay for it to the State, and those who extract non-timber products, such as Brazil nuts, at no cost," she explained.

The manager emphasized that forest concessions play a fundamental role in maintaining the standing forest and in valuing natural resources responsibly. "These management practices are very far from deforestation. We need to reinforce this and show that it is possible to generate income without impacting nature. Sustainable management is one of the main strategies to keep the forest alive and productive," Cíntia highlighted.

Seed Network - The panel also brought contributions from environmental analyst Jossiele Fernandes, who emphasized the importance of seed networks as a key element in the recovery of degraded areas and in strengthening the bioeconomy. "Forest restoration begins with planting, and planting depends on seeds and seedlings. Therefore, implementing seed networks in the State is essential to ensure that degraded areas can be restored, both on public and private lands," she explained.

According to Jossiele, Pará stands out as a reference in nature-based solutions, associating scientific research, innovation, and public conservation policies. "The State has technicians and researchers with great capacity to develop restoration and management projects, such as seed networks and forest coworking. By presenting these experiences at COP30, we aim to attract investments and strengthen international cooperation to expand these actions," she stated.

The debate reinforced the relevance of the state forests of Pará as strategic spaces

The debate reinforced the relevance of the state forests of Pará as strategic spaces for the implementation of policies for the sustainable use of natural resources and for mitigating climate change. The proposal of "forest coworking" symbolized a new paradigm of shared governance of the forest, capable of uniting traditional communities, the private sector, and the State around the same sustainability agenda.
