PCT and CEiiA establish partnership for scientific and technological innovation between Brazil and Portugal
In Belém, at the Tech Zone, representatives from both institutions signed a cooperation commitment, focusing on applied research and sustainability
During the Tech Zone programming, held at the complex during COP 30, this Thursday (13), the Science and Technology Park (PCT) Guamá and the Engineering and Development Center of Portugal (CEiiA) signed a commitment to scientific and technological cooperation, reinforcing the beginning of a strategic collaboration between Brazil and Portugal, focusing on applied research, innovation, and sustainability.
Representatives from CEiiA, the Secretary of Science, Technology and Higher, Professional and Technological Education (Sectet), and the Guamá Foundation, the institution managing the Pará innovation complex, participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement. The head of the secretary, Victor Dias, highlighted Pará's commitment to building science connected to the socio-environmental demands of the Amazon.
“This movement strengthens PCT Guamá as a strategic environment for innovation, applied research, and business focused on biodiversity, boosting the development of the Biotechnology Valley and expanding opportunities for integration between scientific knowledge and sustainable growth. We are living in a unique moment, Pará is consolidating itself as a national and international reference in biotechnology and bioeconomy,” said Victor Dias.
The partnership aims to promote the joint development of high-intensity scientific and technological projects, with a focus on space technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence, and big data. The initiatives will be directed towards the thematic axes: Climate, forests, and ecosystem services; Climate and health; Smart cities, sustainable mobility, and associated logistics chains.
The initiative will last for three years and reinforces the role of PCT Guamá as a hub of innovation in the Amazon, strengthening the commitment of the institutions to sustainable development and the transition to a low-carbon economy. The agreement also provides for the implementation of special projects aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship, training professionals, and promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For Gualter Crisóstomo, executive director of the Digital Innovation Hub of CEiiA, “the partnership is an incentive for us to work together, leveraging and enhancing the competencies of each partner, to develop knowledge, products, and services that can address challenges in the Amazon and that are also global.”
Knowledge to protect the Amazon
One of the focuses of the cooperation will be the creation of intelligent environmental monitoring and climate planning systems, using artificial intelligence and Earth observation data. The actions include mapping land use and occupation, analyzing ecosystem services, modeling and forecasting climate scenarios, as well as applied research for the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity. Another area of work aims to generate tools that assist managers and professionals in anticipating risks and protecting vulnerable populations, with initiatives for technical training of health and civil defense professionals and the development of climate impact forecasting systems.
The partnership with PCT Guamá also proposes the development of innovative solutions for urban mobility and sustainable logistics, including projects for reducing carbon emissions in urban transport and new mobility modalities, utilizing rivers, lakes, and intermunicipal routes. The proposal is to involve universities, companies, and strategic partners from their ecosystems, both national and international, in the development and implementation of the projects.
“This agreement represents a strategic action regarding the internationalization of the park and the innovation system of the state, specifically the high-tech action, which is the case of CEiiA, they have expertise in various technological segments, such as the space area, so we are inducing this partnership focused on creating startups with high-intensity services associated with the use of satellite data. It is important to say that we are bringing resources from Europe, we will make a work plan, starting with a visit to their unit and defining specific actions regarding this agreement,” reinforced João Weyl, president of the Guamá Foundation.
