Cosanpa presents engineering's role in addressing climate change
The integration of engineering, the environment, and social participation contributes to enhancing investments and mitigating environmental impacts
The Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa) presented, this Wednesday (19), a series of actions under development in the Metropolitan Region of Belém as a climate resilience strategy sought by participants of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30), held in the capital of Pará. Among the proposals presented, the integration of engineering, the environment, and social participation was highlighted as alternatives to enhance investments and mitigate impacts.
The debate was held at the booth of the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of Pará (Crea-PA), with the participation of the sub-coordinators of Prodesan Pará (Pará Sanitation Development Project), Natasha Vasconcelos, from the Institutional Strengthening, Gender, and Communication area, and Layla Gomes, from the Environmental and Social area, along with Professor Rodrigo Rodrigues from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará (IFPA), who spoke about the importance of research in generating techniques for transforming the cement industry.
Adaptation - In the area of sanitation and environmental engineering, Layla Gomes pointed out Cosanpa's role in creating a Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Water Supply System of Greater Belém. "Climate change directly impacts sanitation services. Based on a series of studies, mappings, and historical observations, Cosanpa, through Prodesan Pará, is developing this Plan to guide our actions and mitigate these impacts on water supply and sewage services," explained Layla Gomes.
In the field of popular participation, Natasha Vasconcelos presented the actions and projects developed by Prodesan Cidadania, including the promotion of environmental education and citizenship education with students from schools located in areas of sanitation works carried out by Cosanpa. "Through these axes, we want to raise awareness about the importance of water, sanitation, and the preservation of natural resources, strengthening the culture of rights and prevention of gender violence in schools," said Natasha Vasconcelos.
Prodesan Pará is an initiative by Cosanpa, in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), for the implementation of multiple structural works, modernization of systems, social actions in vulnerable territories, community dialogue, and equity initiatives, such as the Gender Policy.
The Program aims to expand the coverage of water supply and sewage services, reduce losses, strengthen water resilience, and promote social inclusion in the municipalities of Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba, benefiting over 1 million people.
