Cine Líbero Luxardo hosts the 16th edition of the French Film Festival of Brazil
The programming runs from November 27 to December 10 and features over 20 films, including works presented at the Cannes and Venice festivals.
The Cine Líbero Luxardo, in Belém, will host the 16th edition of the French Film Festival of Brazil starting November 27. The event, the only national French festival held simultaneously across the country, brings new productions to cinema screens in over 50 Brazilian cities. The programming continues until December 10 and includes films that have been featured in major international showcases, such as Cannes and Venice.
A total of 21 titles will be screened — including dramas, comedies, animations, and thrillers — that address various themes and present different social perspectives. The selection includes works by renowned filmmakers such as François Ozon and Valérie Donzelli, as well as new names in contemporary French cinema, including Victor Rodenbach, who debuts with "The Backstage of Love," and Amélie Bonnin, director of "The Chef's Secret," a film that opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. A classic of French cinema, "The Goat," is also part of the programming.
With the aim of reaching diverse audiences across all regions of the country, the festival will have simultaneous screenings in 52 cities. In addition to Belém, the selection will reach capitals such as Brasília, Goiânia, Curitiba, Manaus, Salvador, Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Volta Redonda.
Highlights of the programming - Among the films screened is "The Attachment," which follows Sandra, a fifty-year-old, independent, and solitary woman who unexpectedly begins to live with her neighbor and his two children — and, against expectations, develops affection for this improvised family.
The classic "The Goat" returns to the screens with the story of a CEO who hires a detective and an unlikely unlucky person to rescue his daughter kidnapped in Mexico — a comedy that has marked generations.
In "The Chef's Secret," Cécile is about to open her own restaurant when she needs to return to her hometown after her father's heart attack. There, she reunites with an old love and revisits choices that marked her journey.
In "The Backstage of Love," Henri and Nora form a couple that shares personal life and work in the theater. When Henri lands his first role in cinema, the balance of the relationship is disrupted, questioning the possibility of loving without losing one's own identity.
The drama "Once Upon a Time My Mother" tells the true story of Esther and her son Roland, born in 1963 with a clubfoot. Determined to ensure the boy a full life, she faces prejudices and challenges, in a film that mixes humor, emotion, and celebrates unconditional love.
Meanwhile, "The Outsider," set in 1930s Algeria, revisits the classic character Meursault, whose apathy towards life culminates in a murder and a trial that discusses not only the crime but also his enigmatic personality.
In "I, Who Loved You," the intense relationship between Simone Signoret and Yves Montand — marked by fame, passions, and Montand's famous affair with Marilyn Monroe — is revisited without victimization, exposing the complexities of a love that has withstood the test of time.
The feature film "Fanon" presents the trajectory of psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, appointed to a hospital in Algeria amid the context of colonization, where his humanistic methods clash with established practices. The biopic portrays the political and social tension of the Algerian war.
In "Out of Control," the marital crisis of Julien and Marie intensifies with the return of an old flame of the husband, leading Marie into a spiral of jealousy that culminates in a dangerous affair and police developments.
The film "Young Mothers" follows five teenagers — Jessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane, and Naïma — who live in a support house and seek to build a better future for themselves and their children.
In "La Pampa," Willy and Jojo, teenagers from a French village, make plans to leave the countryside for the city, until a secret of Jojo comes to light, shaking families and dreams.
"Hands On" presents the story of a successful photographer who abandons his career to dedicate himself to writing and faces deep social issues.
The political thriller "13 Days, 13 Nights" depicts the Taliban's takeover of Kabul in 2021 and the efforts of commander Mohamed Bida and humanitarian Eva to organize a final evacuation convoy to the airport.
In "Barbaric Neighbors," residents of a small town decide to welcome Ukrainian refugees, but when they discover they are Syrians, they face internal conflicts and prejudices, raising the question: after all, who are the real "barbarians"?
The drama "The Richest Woman in the World" presents the intense romance between a powerful heiress and an ambitious photographer, amid family secrets, disputes, and power games.
In "Maya, Give Me a Title," a girl and her father, living in different countries, maintain their bond through stories created from the titles Maya invents — a poetic adventure narrated by Pierre Niney and directed by Michel Gondry.
Finally, "Dream, Therefore I Am" tells the friendship between Grégoire and Michel, from different generations, united by their love for nature and their affection for a bear that escaped from a circus.
