Amid the intense routine of the Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará – Dr. Geraldo Veloso (HRSP), in Marabá, Wednesday (26) gained a special moment: a pause to talk about men's health. The unit held educational lectures in honor of November Blue, bringing together employees and users to discuss the importance of prevention.

Alex Santos, 46 years old, a resident of Marabá in the Carajás region, was at the unit to undergo an X-ray and took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of prevention. He mentioned that he has already undergone the preventive exam this year and encourages other men, especially those in the risk group, not to postpone their care.

“Taking care of health is a simple gesture, but it changes everything. When we seek information and do the right exams, we live with more peace of mind. It’s not just about avoiding disease; it’s about ensuring time and quality of life for those we love,” explained the user.

The lecture was conducted by the institution's urologist Astor Chaves, who provided practical guidance, clarified doubts, and reinforced that prevention is essential. He also reminded that prostate cancer, when discovered early, has high chances of cure, making regular care indispensable.

“Prevention is the safest way to preserve men's health. The earlier the diagnosis, the greater the chances of cure, and this can save lives. It’s not just about exams, but about creating the habit of taking care of oneself. When a man overcomes fear and seeks guidance, he takes a step towards living longer and better,” highlighted the specialist.

The doctor also emphasized that men over 50 years old, or over 45 with a family history, are part of the risk group and should maintain heightened attention. Even though it is a silent cancer, some signs deserve attention, such as difficulty urinating, persistent pelvic pain, or changes in urinary flow.

“Every man in the risk group needs to have annual follow-up. The PSA and the rectal exam are simple, quick tests that can reveal changes even before symptoms appear. Information, prevention, and follow-up save lives, and this is the message we need to repeat always,” concluded the urologist.

When care starts with those who care

Professionals from the care and administrative areas of the Regional Hospital of Marabá also participated in the prevention actions, understanding that men's health also needs to be addressed among those who dedicate their daily lives to caring for others.

Felipe Mesquita, administrative assistant at the institution, highlighted that initiatives like this help reinforce care that often ends up being postponed in daily life. For him, the actions of November Blue serve as an important call for men to rethink priorities and look at their own health with more responsibility.
“We talk so much about welcoming and guiding patients, but sometimes we forget to apply this in our own lives. These initiatives remind us that prevention is also a gesture of self-care, and that we can’t leave it for later,” stated the professional.

Throughout November, the Permanent Education Center (NEP), the Technical Direction, and the Human Resources department of the unit promoted various educational actions for users, patients, and employees, reinforcing the institution's commitment to prevention and comprehensive care. Booklets, guidance, and moments of dialogue helped clarify doubts about prostate cancer and other men's health topics.
