"Sustainable best practices in hospital routine" was the central theme of the 1st Nursing Week of the Emergency Room Dr. Roberto Macedo (PSRM), an urgent and emergency unit located on Augusto Montenegro Avenue in Belém. Between the 14th and 16th, nursing team professionals discussed sustainability in a health context, through the event theme "Planetary Health: Challenges and the Critical Role of Nursing," in adherence to the 2025 theme proposed by the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABen).

The event, which led professionals in the field to reflect on the health of the planet, considering the scenario of climate change and environmental crises that increasingly impact health, also highlights the important role of the 322 nursing professionals who work in health care provided at the state ER, which in its first year of operation, was involved in approximately 500,000 services provided to the population of Pará.

Nursing Manager of PSRM, Cleide Costa

"Sustainable best practices in hospital routine" was one of the two lectures given at the opening of the event. The nursing manager of the Emergency Room, Cleide Costa, pointed out that sustainable practices seek to meet the needs of the present without affecting future generations, relating economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. Thus, the daily nursing activities are directly linked to sustainability and, consequently, to the future of the planet.

"Nursing, as the heart of hospital care, has a fundamental role in planetary health. Each professional is a change agent, capable of transforming small actions into significant impacts. From conserving resources such as water, paper, disposable materials, and energy, to proper waste management, their daily choices shape the health of the surrounding environment," emphasizes the nursing manager.

Environmental Engineer, Rayane Pereira, during a lecture on Climate Change and Public Health: The Role of Nursing in the Era of COP 30

On the second day of the program, the theme "Climate Change and Public Health: The Role of Nursing in the Era of COP 30" was presented to participants through a lecture given by the environmental engineer of the ER, Rayane Pereira, who addressed climate change and public health, especially in the context of COP 30.

"I believe that nursing has a fundamental role in this scenario. Our Emergency Room will be one of the reference units during this period. Nurses are on the front line of health care and have the unique ability to integrate sustainable practices into their daily actions. In addition to meeting patients' needs, they can raise awareness about the impacts of climate change and encourage healthier habits."

Area of operation - At the Emergency Room Dr. Roberto Macedo (PSRM) in Belém, nurses work in health care for users in services that are part of the hospital unit's care profile, from patient admission to discharge, in sectors such as the Surgical Center, Sterilized Materials Center, Inpatient Units, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Procedure Room, among others.

Sirléia Bandeira Galvão, from Ananindeua, is accompanying her daughter at the Emergency Room, where she is assisted 24 hours by the nursing team. She highlights the importance of professionals in health care. "Nursing professionals are very important because without nursing, the hospital does not function. So, it is a very important area. I take this opportunity to congratulate them, as I know that this month of May has the commemorative dates of Nurse's Day and Nursing Technician's Day. I ask God to bless all these professionals in this hospital, and that they continue to be dedicated professionals; that they keep working with love and care. These are my words for everyone. I also cannot fail to thank them for taking such good care of my daughter. Thank you," acknowledges the companion.

"We are on the verge of completing one year of operation of our Emergency Room, and our 1st Nursing Week, in addition to highlighting the work of our professionals, who in this first year, only in risk classification, performed 87,304 nursing services and assisted in approximately 500,000 services, brought a very important agenda, such as how to implement sustainability in a health context, investing in awareness and training with best practices, to make our team understand their role within this new format, empower them, and generate empowerment for daily activities," concluded the assistant director Aristônico Rodrigues.
