Cine Líbero Luxardo screens the re-release of the classic film 'Saneamento Básico' this Thursday
In addition to the re-releases, the schedule also features two premieres: “Lispectorante,” directed by Renata Pinheiro, and the documentary “Criaturas da Mente” by Marcelo Gomes.
Cine Líbero Luxardo opens its new schedule this Thursday (29) with a selection that mixes significant re-releases and notable premieres in the national cinema scene. The films will be showing until next Wednesday (4) at the cinema located on the ground floor of the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of Pará.
The highlight of the week is the re-release of two iconic films by acclaimed filmmaker Jorge Furtado: the comedy “Saneamento Básico, o Filme” (2007) and the short film “Ilha das Flores” (1989). Both productions return to the big screen in restored 4K copies, providing a new experience for the audience — now with superior image quality.
“Saneamento Básico”: social satire with a star-studded cast
Starring Fernanda Torres, Wagner Moura, Camila Pitanga, Lázaro Ramos, Paulo José, and Bruno Garcia, the feature follows a group of residents from the fictional village of Linha Cristal, in Serra Gaúcha, who need to build a septic tank but find themselves facing a bureaucratic impasse: there is funding only for the production of a video. Thus, the unusual idea of making a fictional film about the work itself arises. The narrative unfolds with humor and social critique, highlighting creative improvisation in the face of the lack of public policies.
The film earned Fernanda Torres the Guarani Award for Best Actress and returns to theaters at a time when her co-star, Wagner Moura, is also shining in international spotlight for his performance in “O Agente Secreto,” by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
“Ilha das Flores”: a classic of Brazilian short film
Shown alongside Saneamento Básico, the short film Ilha das Flores is considered a landmark of Brazilian cinema. Winner of the Critics' Award at the Berlin Festival (1990), the short film has become a reference in schools and colleges for its critical, ironic, and impactful way of discussing social inequality, consumption, and human dignity.
The film “Lispectorante”, directed by Renata Pinheiro, tells the story of Glória Hartman, a 58-year-old artist who, in an existential and financial crisis, returns to Recife. There, she begins to experience mysterious events linked to the writer Clarice Lispector while becoming involved with a nomadic artist. In a post-pandemic world in collapse, Glória embarks on a journey of personal and artistic reinvention.
The feature stars Marcélia Cartaxo (A Hora Da Estrela) and has been showcased at festivals such as Rio and Mostra SP, earning awards for Best Actress and Supporting Actor at the FestAruanda of Brazilian Audiovisual (2024).
Directed by Marcelo Gomes, the documentary “Criaturas da Mente” opened the Brasília Festival in November 2024 to great acclaim. Produced by VideoFilmes in partnership with Globo Filmes — being the first release from the producer after the Oscar for “Ainda Estou Aqui” — the film dives into the research of neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro on dreams and the unconscious. Combining science, ancestral spirituality, and experiences with psychoactive substances, the work proposes a new way of understanding the mind and human revolution.
