Rabies: herds of five animal species must be vaccinated in municipalities where vaccination is mandatory
Adepará warns producers about the end of vaccination deadlines for the herd and declaration of the number of vaccinated animals

The Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (Adepará) advises rural producers with herds of cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep, and equines to vaccinate their animals against rabies, a lethal disease primarily transmitted by hematophagous bats (vampire bats). Vaccination of animals is the main method of prevention, in addition to population control of bats.
Vaccination must be carried out by June 30, 2025, and in addition to vaccination, producers must also visit an Adepará unit to declare the number of animals that have been vaccinated. The deadline to prove vaccination is until July 15, 2025, upon presentation of the invoice for the purchase of the rabies vaccine and the description of the vaccinated herd.
Proof of vaccination is required for the issuance of the Animal Transit Guide (GTA), and only animals vaccinated against rabies will be allowed to circulate through the existing agricultural barriers in the State.

The mandatory vaccination against animal rabies was established by ordinance No. 8272/2021 in 50 municipalities under the jurisdiction of the regions of Abaetetuba, Castanhal, Capanema, and Capitão Poço, in the northeastern part of the State and in the Lower Tocantins. The regulation establishes annual vaccination against rabies under the responsibility of animal owners.
“Rabies is a public health issue. It is a lethal disease that has no treatment and no cure. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the herd protected against this disease. The acquisition and application of the vaccine is the producer's responsibility and must be done annually. After vaccination, producers need to inform Adepará about the number of animals and the species that were vaccinated,” recommends Khrisna Tabosa, veterinarian of the State Program for the Control of Herbivore Rabies.
State Program for the Control of Herbivore Rabies - The PECRH aims to achieve excellence in the control of herbivore rabies, contributing to the growth of livestock, reducing economic losses, and collaborating with public health through disease control, population control of hematophagous bats, and sanitary education actions.
