In an initiative that reinforces the integration between municipalities and the Government of Pará in environmental management, a delegation from the Municipal Secretary of the Environment of Marituba visited the headquarters of the Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio) in Belém to discuss the creation of a municipal Conservation Unit (UC). The meeting was led by the Institute's president, Nilson Pinto, and included the presence of the municipal secretary of the Environment, Renata Novaes.

The main topic of the meeting was the proposal to create a municipal park in Marituba, which fits the profile of a new category of UC created by State Law No. 766/2023, the municipal woods, which aim to expand green areas in urban centers of Pará. The initiative is part of the State Government's strategy to encourage the establishment of environmental preservation spaces with easy access for local communities.

During the dialogue, Secretary Renata Novaes also emphasized the importance of increasing access for public school students in Marituba to the Metropolitan Wildlife Refuge of the Amazon. Located within the municipality, the UC managed by Ideflor-Bio is recognized for its environmental value and as a reference space for environmental education in the Metropolitan Region of Belém.

Strengthening - "We want to build a model of UC that is close to the community, both from a territorial and educational perspective. The creation of a municipal park is a fundamental step to make Marituba a greener, healthier city with opportunities for leisure and learning for the population," highlighted Secretary Renata Novaes.

Nilson Pinto emphasized that parks, like municipal woods, have been a low-cost and high social and environmental impact solution, already adopted by municipalities such as Palestina do Pará and São João do Araguaia. "Our goal is to support municipalities in structuring these new UCs, ensuring benefits for both nature and local communities. Municipal parks and woods represent an advancement in environmental management, promoting accessible green spaces and contributing to urban sustainability," he stated.

The proposal from Marituba is also aligned with Municipal Decree No. 751/2024, which establishes guidelines for the creation of the future Municipal Environmental Park of Marituba, planned to be implemented in the area of the Residential Viver Melhor. The decree details steps such as technical surveys, public consultation, and the drafting of specific legislation to formalize the new UC.

Support - Ideflor-Bio has made itself available to provide technical support throughout all stages of the process, from conducting environmental studies to including the future UC in the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC). The partnership also aims to strengthen environmental education actions at the Metropolitan Refuge of the Amazon, focusing on the schools in the municipality.

For the president of the Institute, the growing demand for protected areas in urban environments is a sign of maturity in environmental policy in Pará. "We are very happy to see municipalities increasingly engaged in environmental protection. The creation of municipal parks and woods is a viable and innovative way to ensure quality of life, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation in Pará's cities," concluded Nilson Pinto.
